As a Debarker Operator at Columbia Falls Lumber, you will have the opportunity to:
Learn and operate the debarker and cut off saw for the sawmill.
Set the pace for the sawmill by maintaining the flow of logs and optimizing the quality of the logs being sent to the Head Rig and Twin Saw.
Operation of the Debarker includes knowing log species, operating multiple log decks (keeping infeed decks straight) and conveyors to remove bark from the logs, and monitoring waste systems via cameras and visual observation. Communicating with the cut-off saw operator, head rig saw operator, twin saw operator and log yard. The debarker is also responsible for operating the Prentice (boom) to load logs onto the infeed conveyor or unjam the step feeder, and operate a chain saw when necessary. Making minor repairs to the machinery and maintaining equipment, including but not limited looking for leaks and potential problems, filling ring lube oiler, blowing down equipment, and changing chain saw chains.
Operation of the Cut-Off saw includes knowing log species; operating finish log decks; infeed and outfeed conveyors from the saws; optimizing bucking techniques and procedures (log length, crook, taper, broken ends); and monitoring the flow of logs through the metal detector and into the bins. Communicating with the debarker operator, head rig saw operator and twin saw operator. The cut-off saw is also responsible for operating the Prentice (boom) when necessary to straighten out log deck and operate a chain saw when necessary. Making minor repairs to the machinery and maintaining equipment, including but not limited to looking for leaks and potential problems, blowing down equipment, and changing chain saw chains.
When necessary, the Debarker Operator will assist with other production duties/positions in the sawmill and/or planer.

Additional Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Experience: Prefer a minimum of two (2) years of experience operating a debarker. Experience in a board mill is a plus.
Additional Requirements: The job of Debarker Operator a Heavy Duty job. Heavy Duty involves exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20-50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds continuously to move objects.
A sense of urgency in terms of maximizing production, and minimizing downtime is necessary in this type of manufacturing environment.
Tasks performed involve work with equipment and material that require familiarity with formal safety procedures and the following of these procedures in order to maintain the safety of the work environment.
Candidates must have the ability to interpret and apply verbal and/or written instructions, and have good hand eye coordination.
Willingness to work varying shifts, overtime and weekends/holidays.
