The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college on the campus of the University of South Florida, which has a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty. The College of Arts and Sciences supports a developmental model of advising to assist students in progressing through their degree and enriching their college experience. The candidate will be expected to work on behalf of undergraduate students, the College of Arts & Sciences, and for the greater good of the USF community. Passion for student success is a must.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with Academic Advising Staff throughout the College and other academic areas/departments at the University, like the Office of Orientation, Office of Admissions, Career Center and Student Affairs. Most importantly, each of our advisors are connected directly to one of the 23 academic departments in our college.
Advisors are considered an integral part of the department and will work closely with the departmental administration and faculty. This posting will fill a professional advising position located in either our School of Humanities or School of Social Sciences.
The Academic Advisor will:
Provide timely and accurate academic advising to their assigned advising population.
Facilitate students pre-registration and make recommendations regarding course selection and hours based on student's interest and academic achievements.
Interpret and formulate SUS/ USF/CAS advising policies and procedures.
Participate in small and large group sessions with students either face to face, or via the web to analyze progress toward degree completion.
Participate in and provide presentations during student orientations.
Perform basic statistical analysis and other mathematical calculations pertaining to advising including GPA and weighted averages.
Develop and/or implement retention programs that provide the necessary resources to assist students in achieving academic success.
Provide continuous outreach to academically at-risk students and monitor progress accordingly.
Develop and disseminate various advising materials to aid students in reaching their academic and career goals.
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):
Master's degree; or a bachelor's degree with a minimum of one year of progressively responsible experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the bachelor's degree requirement for this position.
Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience):
At least two years of experience as an academic advisor for a large college or university using Banner/Oasis and DegreeWorks.
Special Skills/Licenses/Training/Certifications Necessary:
Commitment to the recruitment and retention of a culturally diverse student body; ability to organize and handle multiple projects simultaneously; awareness of other cultures and ethnicity's; and experience communicating with students of various nationalities.
Career counseling training or certification is not required but would be preferred.
Additionally while a degree in one of the Humanities or Social Science disciplines is not required, understanding the value of a Liberal Arts education is a must.
