The University of South Alabama Medical Center is a regional referral center for south Alabama, southern Mississippi and the panhandle of Florida. It is also the areas’ only level I trauma center. The University of South Alabama Medical Center is managed by the USA HealthCare Management, LLC.
Supervises and coordinates activities of subordinate staff involved in facility maintenance and Chiller/Cooling Tower Plant operations, building heating and air-conditioning systems, hot water generators, boiler and steam converters, fire alarm systems, small projects to include replacing equipment and renovating work areas; monitors operations and conducts a routine, and ongoing assessment of the building HVAC systems operations and performance; performs tests, rounds and analyzes data to ensure the proper functioning of department HVAC equipment; maintains, monitors, and performs preventive maintenance on all equipment at the direction of the Assistant Director including; refrigeration, heat exchanger, HVAC, electrical, emergency backup systems and hot water systems; monitors operations, adjusts and maintains refrigeration, chilled water, and air conditioning equipment; boilers, and ventilation and hot water heaters; pumps, valves, piping and filters and other mechanical and electrical equipment; records readings and makes adjustments when necessary to ensure proper operation of equipment; installs, repairs and maintains electrical, mechanical, and plumbing/piping equipment, machinery and controls located in the interior and exterior of buildings; climbs ladders and moves equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs.; analyzes the operation of various systems, determines the cause of problems/malfunctions and takes corrective action as required; installs and repairs plumbing/piping/tubing; wires single and three phase motors; runs conduit; pulls wire to machinery, motors, and operating parts; installs and rebuilds air compressors and heat exchangers; replaces bearings in all types of motors; replaces seals on pumps; installs and repairs piping, valves, filters, hot water systems and associated controls; oversees 3rd party contractors for the safe and compliant operation, maintenance, and modification of critical equipment; receives and performs work orders for preventative and corrective maintenance on critical systems and building physical structure; utilizes a University vehicle to travel to various work sites; supervises lower level staff to include assigning duties and checking work; inspects work to ensure compliance; completes necessary documentation to complete work orders; utilizes a computer to generate reports and prepare correspondence; accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and hospital policies and procedures, including those pertaining to confidentiality; utilizes appropriate communications skills with physicians, patients, family members, and hospital staff in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; assists with orientation of new employees; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety standards; regular and prompt attendance and the ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
High school diploma or equivalent, five years experience in the operation, maintenance, and installation of HVAC systems, two of which were in a supervisory capacity, possession of a valid driver's license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama, and current Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification. Successful completion of a program of study in HVAC at an accredited vocational/technical school may substitute for two years of the required experience. Experience reading blueprints is preferred.
