The Micro Needlemaker will set up and operate all equipment to produce micron sized needle products to exacting quality and performance standards. Check and adjust each operation to insure quality and performance standards. Check and adjust each operation to insure quality of product and suitability for further processing. Inspect all materials and tools required to start given operation and make adjustments, alterations, etc. as necessary. Utilize microscopes, optical comparator and various inspection devices to check product quality. Make equipment changeovers, diagnose equipment malfunctions and make minor repairs and adjustments.

The Micro Needlemaker will set up, operate, and diagnose problem areas on all equipment and fabricated fixtures in assigned areas. This includes Wire Coil Rewinder, Wire Straightener, Primary Needlemaking Machine, Annealing Fixture, Hand Fabrication Stations, Heat Treat Oven, Electropolish Unit, Rectifier and Swage Presses. Perform all product and tooling inspections with use of microscopes, needle gauge, optical comparator, micrometer and other apparatus. Make minor modifications and refinish equipment tooling such as channel punches, and swaging dies, etc., finishing with hand tools and lapping compound to close tolerances. Exercise judgment regarding functional product testing, determining "D" dimension of needle through test swaging before further processing. Maintain production history records as required for Needlemaking, Heat Treat and Electropolishing. Operate in an orderly manner and maintain equipment, tooling, solutions and area in a high level of organization ad cleanliness. Organize raw wire to be rewound, rewound wire to be straightened. Set up and run wire straightener, perform appropriate tests for straightness (as per Process Specification #32) and assign appropriate shipment number to each straightened coil. Set up, operate and troubleshoot Needlemaking Machine as per Process Specifications; properly place spool of straightened wire, feed through, adjust performing, channel forming, tail forming and cutoff press; adjust blank straightener, primary grinding station, flattening press, curving unit and annealing unit. Set-up, operate and troubleshoot any other related needlemaking machine. Record data, such as, date, lot number, needle code, wire size, shipment number, coil number, quantity, "D" dimension, heat number and any other pertinent information as deemed necessary. Perform all quantity checks and document same. Supply sample needles to Electropolish for set-up. Check each lot in numbered Heat Treat boat; indicate boat number on lot identification ticket; include five foot loop raw wire from same needle lot. Bring needles to Heat Treat area to be properly cleaned in Needle Wash station by Heat Treat attendants. Set up and adjust swage presses in Micro Suture area. Perform any other work of a related nature to assure efficient machine operations and the maintenance of production schedule and fine quality standards. Participate in needle Development activities and evaluations

This position pays $25.10/hour and is under a Collective Bargaining Agreement in a union environment.


A minimum of a High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent required. A minimum of 1 year of operator experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred. Basic computer skills required. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Basic mechanical skills required. Experience troubleshooting mechanical equipment is preferred. Inspection experience is preferred. Basic math skills, with the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute percentages and work with decimals and fractions, required. The ability to perform tasks with high dexterity and fine manipulation is required. Must have the ability to perform measurements and inspections using microscopes, tweezers, optical comparators, dial indicators and micrometers. The ability to work with acids and solvents required. Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks and various processes and coordinate with other departments to effectively perform job duties. This position requires the ability to work rotating 8-hour shifts (6:30 am - 2:30 pm and 2:30 pm - 10:30 pm). The ability to work occasional overtime and some holidays is required.
