AmeriCorps Program at The Unity Council, Oakland, CA

The Unity Council, founded in 1964, is a non-profit community development corporation committed to enriching the quality of life of families primarily in the Fruitvale District of Oakland. Its mission is to help families and individuals build wealth and assets through comprehensive programs of sustainable economic, social and neighborhood development.

As an affiliate of the Corporation for National and Community Service and the National Council of La Raza, AmeriCorps members serving at the Unity Council will participate in Workforce and Community Development programs specifically designed to address the needs in our community.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience in direct service, community development, and outreach
  • Ability to work with diverse communities
  • Knowledge of Oakland communities
  • Work in teams and demonstrate initiative while working independently
  • Willingness and ability to play various roles and get things done
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Open to gaining new knowledge and skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Spanish/English bilingual preferred
Program Requirements

  • Must be at least 17 years old, US Citizen or lawful permanent resident, provide copy of HS Diploma
  • Commit to work 40hrs/week for the entire term, September 1 st , 2013 through August 31 st , 2014
Program benefits

  • Monthly stipend approximately $1,400-1,600
  • Education award upon successful completion of service approximately $5,500
