Under supervision, to assist a Dentist or Dental Hygienist at chairside during examination and treatment of patients; to clean, sterilize and arrange dental instruments and to perform other specialized dental procedures.

Submission of Radiation Safety License from the CA State Board of Dental Examiners and their RDA certification from the Board of Dental Examiners is required.

Typical Tasks:
In addition to the Typical Tasks associated with the Dental Assistant classification:

Prepares, arranges and sterilizes dental instruments, equipment and accessories on trays;

Relieves the Dentist of the routine dental procedures;

Keeps sufficient amount of dental supplies available;

Obtains tooth pulp cultures and tests tooth pulp health;

Applies and removes post extraction dressings;

Fabricates temporary crowns;

Conducts mouth inspections and polishes teeth;

Places bases and liners in teeth;

Re-cements a dislodged temporary crown;

Mixes and maintains supplies of developing and sterilizing solutions;

Provides information on dental health and preventive dental techniques to the general public and other staff;

Assists in administering sedation to patients;

Demonstrates proper dental care;

Trains dental students and interns.

Acts as receptionist in a dental clinic, screening patients and referring them as appropriate;

Answers questions concerning dental procedures and fees;

Schedules patient appointments;

Prepares patients for examination and treatment;

Assists at the dental chair as directed;

Prepares and mixes filling material and cements;

Takes, develops and mounts dental X-rays;

Instructs patients regarding dental hygiene;

Maintains the dental office and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition;

Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment;

Sterilizes instruments;

Completes forms as needed, maintains patient chart records, orders supplies and prepares monthly reports; and

Performs related duties as necessary

Employment Standards:
Possession of a Radiation Safety License from the California State Board of Dental Examiners, and possession of a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) certificate from the Board of Dental Examiners, State of California.

Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities.

Experience Note:
A candidate would normally acquire the knowledge and abilities required for this classification by graduation from high school or (GED) and two years experience as a Dentist's chairside assistant.

Knowledge of:
Dental terminology;

Charting techniques, and clinic operational procedures;

Principles and methods of sterilization of dental equipment, instruments, and supplies;

The care and use of all dental equipment, instruments, and materials;

Preventive dental/oral hygiene;

Dental office procedures;

Dental x-ray techniques and safety measures;

Interviewing techniques;

Ability to:
Interview patients to obtain dental health history;

Communicate effectively in providing information and assisting patients;

Perform a variety of specialized dental procedures;

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;

Work independently.

Veterans Preference Information

This recruitment has been identified as non-entry level by the Human Resources Director. Any veteran who has submitted a copy of their DD214 form, and received an honorable discharge within the last five years, will be given a preferential credit of five percent (ten percent for those identified as disabled veteran’s), after attaining a passing examination score for a numerically scored examination.
