Performs engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor . MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience
Must be certified as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) unless the certification has been waived by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. Employees certified as an EIT in another state must obtain an EIT certification from the Texas Board of Professional Engineers within six (6) months of hire, and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment AND Bachelor of science degree in engineering which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) plus one (1) year engineering-related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers . OR Bachelor of science degree in engineering technology which has been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) plus four (4) years engineering-related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers OR Bachelor's or graduate degree in a mathematical, physical or engineering science approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers plus four (4) years engineering-related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers OR Bachelor of science degree in engineering which has not been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET), but has been approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers plus four (4) years engineering-related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers OR Master of science degree in engineering or a master of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) . (Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering.
Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education.
Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.
Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation and analysis activities.
Uses automated roadway/structural/hydraulic design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.
Performs design computations and plan preparations to include preparing plan sheets for construction projects.
Performs engineering calculations for plan quantities as part of PS&E preparation activities.
Creates detailed PS&E.
Drives a state vehicle and assists in survey activities.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety sensitive and vessel crewmember positions. Commercial drivers, safety sensitive employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
Driver 's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.

External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.

Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.

If hired, employee must provide document(s) within three(3) days of hire date that establish identity and employment eligibility. A complete list of acceptable documents is on file with the local Texas Workforce Commission office.

Department employees or family members will not have, either directly or indirectly, any financial or other personal interest in a department (or a TxDOT) contract or subcontract of any kind. A contract may not be awarded to an entity that is owned in whole or in part by any TxDOT employee or immediate family member.

As part of its employment process, TxDOT may procure or have prepared a criminal background check. An applicant with an unsatisfactory criminal background check report is ineligible to be hired for the position for which the report is initiated.
