User Experience Designer / Architect

Our customer-facing and corporate applications and portals deliver customized information, resources and self-service applications to a global audience. The UX Designer plays a critical role in the design and implementation of new features, as well as the ongoing care and maintenance of UL’s intranet, extranets and business systems. The UX Designer will be the UXD group’s voice for a wide variety of enhancements and projects, working closely with project managers, developers and business analysts. The selected candidate will work with various technical information teams in understanding technology limitations and how implementation decisions impact user experience in terms of browser compatibility, accessibility, internalization, usability and performance.

Job Responsibilities

Lead User Experience Research and Design in selected projects and applications
Implement and improve CSS standards, UX strategy and recommendations; incorporate RIA elements when prudent
Gather requirements to determine target audience and objectives (Personas); analyze user and business needs
Develop user scenarios, navigational structures, sitemaps, user/task flows, and wireframes
Create graphical prototypes and interactive simulations to present concepts
Use knowledge of Section 508 accessibility compliance when applicable
Conduct UX Research, including; usability testing (local and remote), multi variant and A/B tests, heuristic analysis, contextual inquiry, ethnography, card sorting, gap analysis and competitive benchmarks
Perform design reviews, style guidelines development, and presentations on style standards and UX conventions
Create user interface design within established architectural and product standards. Constantly consider navigation and information architecture as it applies to solutions
Design web pages using latest technologies and products (such as HTML, CS2, JavaScript, ActionScript, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Visio, XML, AJAX or XSLT)
Design within existing brand and UX standards, and test for UXD Acceptance
Help developers and development teams troubleshoot and fix UI problems
Collaborate with internal project teams to ensure that an explicit user experience is maintained throughout project execution
Scope new project work and create detailed project cost estimates, plans, and schedules
Assist staff in web site maintenance, design and development for existing sites and applications
Guide our content creators/publishers and developers in usability best practices and GUI standards
Help raise UL’s UCD Maturity Model
Other duties as directed

Requirements:
Education

Bachelor's Degree in HCI, Human Factors Design, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Information Technology, (or equivalent experience following user centered design methods) from an accredited university required
MBA or other advanced degree a plus
ITIL certification a plus

Experience

5+ years experience creating dynamic user interfaces for complex enterprise and client-facing web applications
Good understanding of the (enterprise) software lifecycle and the role of UX/UI design throughout the software life cycle
Evidence of continuing education in fields of usability and user-centered design
A background in Human Factors, User-Centered Design, Cognitive Psychology, Information Architecture, or a similar field
Good communication and negotiation skills
Experience with Agile environments a plus
