This position supervises, directs, and coordinates, the work of Operating Engineers and other trade staff within the Central Plant Operations unit. This work includes the inspection, efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of campus thermal systems, related plant equipment, water treatment systems as well as maintenance and repair of campus domestic water & sewer distribution systems, and campus gas utility distribution systems within the domain of the Facilities Management Division. This position also supports staff in the resolution of afterhours and weekend request received though the customer response center line (2Fix). This position may additionally be required to handle the responsibilities of other Central Plant Operations Assistant Chief Engineers as well as act in the capacity of the Chief Engineer in the event of their absence. The Assistant Chief Engineer works independently to resolve facility issues and customer concerns, while ensuring good public relations and a positive department image through personal contacts and assurance of quality standards, exceptional customer service, and a safe, functional, clean, efficient and attractive living and learning environment. This position prepares performance appraisals and counseling of assigned personnel and coordinate their training and evaluations. This position manages department resources and utility systems to meet reliability and energy efficiency objectives along with regulatory compliance requirements.

Educational Requirements:

The incumbent must have the following educational achievements:
- 1st Class DC Steam Engineers license (non restricted)
- Universal CFC License
- Associate Degree or equivalent education

It is preferred that the incumbent have the following educational achievements:
- NIULPE Chief Engineering License
- Bachelor’s Degree (in a relevant field of study)
- LEED Green Associate
- Facilities Management certificate
- CEM (Certified Energy Manager)
- Leadership training
- Regulatory compliance training

Minimum Requirements:

- 1-2 years of CMMS experience
- 5 years of 1st Class Steam Engineer experience
- 2-3 years of supervisory experience
- Supervisory skills
- Ability to train staff
- Ability to read blueprints
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills and email usage
- Experience operating building automation systems
- Ability to maintain a valid driver license with fewer than 2 points

Preferred Requirements:

- 5 years of experience or equivalent as Assistant Chief Engineer
- 5 years of CMMS experience
- 1-2 years of regulatory compliance experience
- Budgetary experience
- Basic accounting skills
- Contract management experience

Additional Information:

This position may work in areas which experience temperature extremes (i.e. heat or cold) or confined spaces in the performing of principle accountabilities for the position.
