Senior Operations Engineer (Santa Cruz, CA)

SchoolMessenger, founded in 1999, is a local Santa Cruz company, and the leading provider of parent-notification solutions. We provide SAAS based mass-notification services to thousands of districts and schools nationwide, delivering millions of important messages each day. Our business boils down to one thing - the successful and reliable delivery of our customer's messages. As a key member of our expanding Technical Operations team, you will be instrumental in the design, maintenance, monitoring and expansion of our production and corporate IT infrastructure.

What you'll do:
- Operate and maintain a nationwide on-demand notification service hosted within multiple datacenter facilities
- Monitor network, host, and service health and respond to any outages or other incidents
- Analyze system performance for planning proactive maintenance and capacity upgrades
- Fulfill operations-related support requests from internal Engineering and Customer Service staff escalations

What you'll need for this position:
- Previous experience operating in a NOC or Technical Operations environment
- Solid background in UNIX/Linux/BSD operating system and security maintenance (especially CentOS 5/6 and Debian GNU/Linux)
- Sharp troubleshooting faculties, deductive reasoning, and careful attention to detail
- Independent and self-directed work ethic when participating in a collaborative environment
- Dedicated commitment to quality customer service
- Exceptional project and time management skills
- Ability to communicate clearly in written and verbal English
- Excellent personal presentation and the ability to keep a tidy work environment
- Valid California state driver's license or other form of government-issued identification
- Method of transportation suitable for round trips of up to 150 miles on short notice
- Availability to work non-traditional hours when necessary, including a rotating on-call pager duty schedule
- Physical ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted

The following experience and skill sets are a plus:
- Competency in operating VoIP and traditional TDM telephony infrastructure (Asterisk w/ SIP and T1/DS3/OC3 PRI)
- Email transport software and deliverability management operational theory (Postfix/Sendmail and derivative commercial MTAs, SPF, DomainKeys/DKIM, IP reputation)
- Familiarity with large scale Java application management (Sun/Oracle JRE, Jetty, JMX)
- SQL database software maintenance and clustering techniques (MySQL/Percona)
- NoSQL database/distributed content software maintenance and clustering techniques (Cassandra, Ceph, Amazon S3, Membase, CouchDB, MongoDB, et al.)
- Web application software, server scripting modules, and related infrastructure components (Apache, SSL, PHP, Squid, nginx, memcached, etc.)
- Proficiency with various service provider-grade virtualization technologies (VMware vSphere/vCenter/ESX/ESXi, Xen, KVM)
- Understanding of various high availability, cluster, and infrastructure management techniques (Heartbeat, LVS, DRBD, Puppet/Chef/CFEngine)
- High-performance NAS/SAN storage data management (NetApp FAS, HP EVA, Generic NFS)
- Load balancing and maintenance of high availability network services on local and global scales (F5 BIG-IP LTM/GTM, Citrix NetScaler ADC, Linux LVS)
- DNS and directory services software (BIND9, PowerDNS, OpenLDAP, Netscape/Red Hat Directory Server)
- Big data processing and analysis (Hadoop, Lucene, Solr)
- Infrastructure monitoring and trending software (Nagios, Cacti, Syslog-NG/RSyslog, Splunk, Graylog2, logstash)
- Basic host-level network security techniques and services (iptables, OpenVPN, fail2ban)
- Rackmount and blade server hardware and software maintenance, including all appropriate best practices
- Previous network maintenance experience, especially involving Cisco and Juniper device families
- Datacenter facilities management (electrical power, HVAC, cable distribution plant)
- Awareness of system administration community culture and current events
