Iowa State University invites applications for a Director of Federal Relations to assist in advancing the University's federal advocacy priorities with respect to federally sponsored research, higher education policy, health policy, and coordinating communications efforts. This position reports to the Associate Vice President/Chief of Staff within the President's Office at Iowa State University and is based in Ames, Iowa.
In addition, the Director of Federal Relations will be responsible for the appropriations process at the federal level and understanding the land grant philosophy. This position will also track a wide variety of legislative issues, and connect daily legislative and policy developments to the University's overarching goals of academic and research excellence. The incumbent will interact with key Members and staff in Congress, the Executive Branch, the higher education and research community in Washington, and senior administrators and faculty at Iowa State University.
The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter and enthusiastic team player, possessing strong communications skills, both oral and written. The ability to multi-task, quickly grasp details and make sound decisions will also be essential for success in this position.
Bachelor's degree and 5 years related experience OR Master's degree and 3 years related experience OR Ph.D. or other doctoral/professional program and some related experience.
Additional experience as a Legislative Director or Chief of Staff.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of public higher education and federal legislative process.
Experience articulating recommendations and policy positions in writing.
Ties to the Iowa congressional delegation.
Minimum $56,196; commensurate with qualifications
The duties of this position will require regular travel to Washington, DC.
