To provide care for freshwater mussels and stream fishes in a laboratory. Assist in the propagation and culture of freshwater mussels with other personnel. Assist in performing field surveys for collection of mussels, such as snorkeling and wading. Assist in setup (plumbing, etc.) of propagation tanks. Assist in conducting some fish collection through seining and backpack electrofishing. Monitor and maintain water quality in lab recirculating systems. Maintain records on fishes and mussels in the laboratory. Data entry and routine equipment maintenance. Monitor and repair experiments in recirculating aquaculture systems. Maintain algae for feeding mussels and implement quality control measures.
The successful candidate must have the ability to collect and identify mussels and fish; good mechanical skills; ability to work outdoors year-round; be able to lift up to 50 lbs and carry equipment for extended periods of time; must be able to swim well; available for periodic overnight travel and periodic weekend work; able to work in and around water and under potentially adverse weather conditions; work well alone and with others.
Experience with aquaculture; experience with research experiments and statistics; experience working with minimal supervision in a lab setting; experience in stream sampling and data collection.
