Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Academic Division Dean of Social Sciences has oversight over departments on all campuses offering History, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, and Social Work as teaching disciplines. The position reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The position is responsible for working with the Department Chairs and faculty members in all the aforementioned departments to maintain the highest academic standards in course offering. The position serves as an advocate for the unit's Department Chairs, has responsibility for evaluating their work performance, and has oversight over faculty evaluations conducted by the Department Chairs. The position is responsible for working with Department Chairs and their related faculty to ensure efficient management of the unit's resources. In addition, the Dean of Social Sciences position will have oversight of campus student and personnel issues related to the academic area on the campus of location.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative experience at the Department Chair or higher position in a college or university environment is required. A combination of education, training, and experience
A minimum of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in History, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, or Social Work is required. A Doctorate degree in one of these disciplines is strongly preferred.
Finalist candidate must be qualified by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to teach courses in one of these disciplines at the collegiate level.
Thorough knowledge and skills in the management of fiscal and personnel resources.
Knowledge of and commitment to the community college philosophy.
Knowledge of and commitment to principles of civic engagement and service learning.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally, orally, and in writing.
Clear understanding of quality curriculum assessment, professional development, and promotion and tenure processes.
Strong ability to provide leadership in academic planning and program development.
Excellent employee relation skills and ability to nurture and promote a collegial environment that encourages the scholarly exchange of ideas and initiatives, and work cooperatively with counterparts on other campuses.
