The Naval Research Laboratory is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for over 85 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world.

NRL’s main site is located in Washington, DC with two other sites located in Stennis, MS and Monterey, CA. Our Stennis, MS site focuses on ocean research and our Monterey, CA site focuses on meteorology; whereas NRL DC is conducting research in a wide variety of areas.

Salary Ranges:
Washington D.C.- NP-02 - $33,692.00- $74,356.00

NP-03- $61,890.00- $115,961.00

Stennis, MS- NP-02 - $30,964.00- $68,334.00

NP-03 - $56,878.00- $106,570.00

Monterey, CA- NP-02 - $36,657.00- $80,898.00

NP-03 - $67,336.00- $126,164.00

This establishes Public Notice under the Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Appointment Authority (DSAA).

The position is covered by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).

Seeking college/university graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science. Applications can be accepted from students who expect to complete qualifying education within 9 months from the date of application.

DUTIES:
1550- This series includes professional positions which primarily involve the application of, or research into, computer science methods and techniques to store, manipulate, transform or present information by means of computer systems. The primary requirements of the work are (a) professional competence in applying the theoretical foundations of computer science, including computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; (b) specialized knowledge of the design characteristics, limitations, and potential applications of systems having the ability to transform information, and of broad areas of applications of computing which have common structures, processes, and techniques; and (c) knowledge of relevant mathematical and statistical sciences.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Education Requirement:
  • Successfully completed (or will complete within 9 months) a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in computer science; OR
  • Successfully complete (or will complete within 9 months) a bachelor's degree related to computer science with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Required coursework must include at least 15 of the 30 semester hours in a combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
Eligibility Requirement for NP-02:
  • Meets basic education requirement (above) with a cumulative GPA of 3.45 or better in computer science or a related curriculum; OR
  • Within the top 10 percent of a university’s major school of graduate studies in computer science or a related curriculum
Eligibility Requirement for NP-03:
  • Meets basic education requirement (above) and successfully obtained (or will within 9 months) a Master’s or higher degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better in computer science or a related curriculum; OR
  • Within the top 10 percent of a university’s major school of graduate studies in computer science or a related curriculum
FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide such evidence when applying.

Special Requirements

Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

A security clearance is a requirement of this position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a position offer or removal.

Position may require occasional travel

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
This position will be rated using a Deferred Inventory. Depending on the vacancy availability, your application may or may not be rated or referred.

Military Spouse Preference (MSP): If you are the spouse of an active duty military member, then you may be eligible for MSP. To be eligible you: (1) must have been married to your military sponsor prior to reporting to the new duty assignment; and, (2) must have accompanied your military sponsor on a Permanent Change in Station (PCS) move; and, (3) the position for which you are applying must be within the commuting area of your military sponsor's new permanent duty station. MSP does not apply, however, when preference would violate statutes or regulations on veteran's preference or nepotism.
