The Diane Rehm Show is in search of a Part-time Producer. Working closely with the Executive Producer / Senior Talk Host and the Managing Producer, the Producer creates topical issue-oriented daily live interview / listener call-in programs. The Producer is also responsible for assigning tasks and reviewing the work of interns, volunteers and phone screeners.
A Bachelors degree, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities, is required for this job.
Five years of experience in journalism, news or publishing is required, and eight years of experience in those areas is preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, patiently and persuasively with the widest possible variety of people is required. General office skills are necessary. The Producer must have demonstrated skill working with creative individuals and have experience working under constant deadline pressure.
In addition, the Producer must possess absolutely clear and accurate knowledge of current events and the judgment to predict which stories will work on the radio and which will have currency as much as a week away. The Producer must be able to skillfully pre-interview potential guests for the program, to do complex research and writing, and to compile appropriate support material for the Host. The Producer must be able to write in a clear and concise "radio" manner, understanding what works on-air and what does not. The Producer must be able to prepare insightful potential on-air questions and to provide the answers to these questions before the show goes on air. The Producer must be able to work under deadline pressure and react to breaking news and unexpected events with calm and clear thinking.
Knowledge of radio production techniques is preferred. Talk show experience is also preferred.
The Part-time Producer will work up to 27 hours per week.
