The Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical community that provides acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama. The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000 in Alabama and treats approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 138 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.

Duties: The Nurse Recruiter demonstrates responsibility and accountability for the evaluation and implementation of mechanisms for effective recruitment and retention of registered nurses in accordance with the goals, objectives, and mission of the Birmingham VAMC; and the philosophy, standards and policies of Birmingham VAMC, Patient Care Service. The Nurse Recruiter demonstrates a sustained high level of clinical practice, leadership and management skills to improve patient care for an aging, adult population through the recruitment and retention of quality, skilled, professional nurses. The Nurse Recruiter will exhibit excellent interpersonal relationship skills in interpreting and communicating service and hospital goals, objectives and policies to current hospital staff and the nursing and non-nursing community. The Nurse Recruiter acts as a liaison for human resource matters and is knowledgeable about human resource recruitment and hiring policies and procedures. The Nurse Recruiter serves as the nursing staffing methodology coordinator and is responsible for directive and policy compliance. The Nurse Recruiter is responsible for management and reporting of nurse staffing reports, including gains and losses, turnover, vacancy rates, resource management requests, workload, succession planning, degrees, certifications and staffing reports. Nurse Recruiter is responsible to the Associate Director for Patient Care Services and works collaboratively with the Chief Nurses/ Patient Care Service, Nurse Managers, Staff Development, and Human Resources Management.

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).
Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Licensure : Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Physical Standards: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
- Nurse I, level I-Associate Degree or diploma in nursing; no experience
- Nurse I, level 2-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 1 year experience OR Associate Degree in Nursing and a Bachelors in a related field, no experience, OR BSN, no experience
- Nurse I, Level 3-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 2-3 years experience OR Associates Degree or Diploma in Nursing and Bachelors degree in a related field, approx. 1-2 years experience OR BSN, approx. 1-2 years experience OR MSN or related field with a BSN or Bachelors degree in related field, no experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Masters of Science in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Masters in related field preferred
Two years registered nurse experience in an acute care environment
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
Demonstrated ability to be dependable, self directed and flexible, including flexibility in assignment and time scheduling
Current BLS certification
Professional nusing certification preferred
Excellent customer service skills
Demonstrated excellent analytical and computer skills
Demonstrated presentation skills
