The director, communications and media relations provides direct oversight and management of MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company and MidAmerican Energy Company corporate communications and media relations activities. Serves as the corporate communications liaison to MidAmerican's global businesses, providing communications strategy and counsel to the businesses and to MidAmerican Energy Company departments, supporting operational excellence and achievement of corporate goals. Responsible for the development, integration and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction of the organization. Leads in the development of internal communication, speeches and presentation given by members of executive management.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)

Develops and executes strategic and tactical communications plans, which ensure alignment with company goals and objectives. Through communications, advances the organization's position with key audiences and drives broader awareness of organization through earned media and employee communications.

  • Develops and executes plans to maintain and improve cross-collaboration efforts among MidAmerican Energy Holdings
  • Company businesses. Supports all special projects, including merger and acquisition activities.
Manages communications staff to develop communications and provide communication support, writing and planning, to employees and other departments, and external communications.

Manages development of MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company's president and CEO presentations for the annual Executive Leadership Conference, Berkshire Hathaway Board of Directors meetings. Leadership Development Conferences and presentations for speaking engagements as they arise. Provides support to the executive management team for other presentations and materials, as requested.

  • Writes president and CEO letters for distribution to global employee base (annually, four to five letters).
  • Manages, coordinates and writes the company's award entries in the Platts Global Energy Awards and other major awards as deemed appropriate by executive management.
Oversees and contributes to the development of employee communications materials and external collaterals for MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, including newsletters, corporate video, corporate brochure, company fact sheets and other materials as requested by senior management.

Act as lead spokesperson for all MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company media requests, which are primarily from national media. Serves as primary MidAmerican Energy Company spokesperson for national media requests and within the Des Moines and Omaha media markets. Manages 24/7 response to media inquiries. Contacts business unit leaders to make them available for media inquiries. Exercises judgment to prioritize media opportunities and appropriately advances requests to senior management.

  • Serves as an ambassador for the organization and builds relationships with local, state and national media.
  • Develops talking points and related materials to support contemporary issues.
  • Collaborates with internal departments on messaging to meet the needs of the media, customers and other key audiences.
Serves in an advisory capacity to other departments and as the corporate communications liaison with MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company businesses.

Oversees the company's social media efforts by collaborating with internal groups to develop strategic initiatives that will provide value to the company and its customers.

Performs administrative activities necessary for the effective management of the department, budget administration, organization goals and objectives, and planning, organizing, integrating, measuring and reporting the work performed within the department.

Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Applicable advanced degree preferred.

Eight years of related experience, including three years of supervisory/management responsibilities.

Ability to effectively manage media inquiries 24/7, while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Demonstrate superior influencing and negotiation skills, with both internal and external contacts. Continuously demonstrate superior problem solving, decision-making and project management skills.

Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills to advocate the company’s position with the news media, other external community contacts and internal audiences.

Proficient in software skills, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentation tools. Proficient in Associated Press style.

Effective interpersonal skills and leadership abilities to instruct, provide orientation, guide and coordinate workflow.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Project management skills; experience in developing project plans with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Administrative skills to gather information and coordinate the company’s response to the media, to prepare speeches and presentations, to manage completion of the annual report and to monitor budgets.

Ability to travel overnight as required. May be required to travel domestically and internationally.
