The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech is a world-class research institute in the life sciences, integrating theory, modeling and simulation with computational and experimental science in a transdisciplinary, team-based research environment. The Institute's mission is to solve some of society's most important problems in the life sciences through transdisciplinary research and education, including but not limited to, biomedicine, modeling and simulation of biological and other networks, and bioinformatics. The (Lead) Database Administrator will work as part of a team of scientists and researchers to support multiple projects through VBI's Core Computational Facility (CCF). The (Lead) Database Administrator will be responsible for recommending, designing and developing database systems for handling, storing and recovering large amounts data in support of sponsored research. In addition, this position will be responsible for processes for data handling from data generation to data submission and loading and exchanging of data to and from external repositories. This position will interact with internal and external researchers, faculty, staff, and other clientele. Since this position will have access to high-performance computing systems and other information technology equipment, a criminal background check is required.
-MS or BS with equivalent experience in Computer Science or closely related field for rank of Research Associate; or PhD or MS with equivalent experience in Computer Science or closely related field for Senior Research Associate. -Demonstrated progressive professional experience with database management systems. -Proficiency with Oracle: database administration experience; knowledge of Oracle architecture, security, backup and recovery procedures, performance tuning, and networking. Experience troubleshooting Oracle applications in UNIX/Linux environments and PL/SQL. -Proficiency with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL: database administration experience; knowledge of MySQL/PostgreSQL architecture, security, backup and recovery procedures, performance tuning, and networking. Experience troubleshooting applications in UNIX/Linux environments. -Experience with data integration; extraction, transformation and load (ETL) procedures; or comparable data management experience. -Programming experience, in particular in a Linux/Unix environment. -Creative, independent, and highly motivated, with good communication and documentation skills. -Strong work habits and ability to work independently as well as with a development group. -Knowledge of commercially available data modeling tools, such as ER/win or Toad Data Modeler. -Experience exploring and deploying next generation data storage technologies in support of large-scale data handling (required for rank of Senior Research Associate).
-Experience with database replication and Oracle Data Guard. -Experience with Solr / Lucene. -Experience with Microsoft SQL Server. -One or more years experience working with databases for bioinformatics.
