The County of Yuba is currently recruiting to establish a list for Supervising Group Counselor in the Probation Department’s Juvenile Hall division. This is the first full working-supervisory classification in the Group Counselor series, depending on the area assigned this position reports directly to the Deputy Superintendent or Probation Program Manager. Under limited supervision, the incumbent plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of Group Counselors and other associated staff on an assigned shift in the Juvenile Hall and/or the Youth Guidance Center; recommends selection of staff; provides training and administers discipline as required; oversees and monitors the safety of juvenile detainees; monitors and enforces juvenile hall rules and regulations; may oversee a work release program or alternative sentencing program and performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum: Associates Degree with course work in psychology, administration of justice/criminology, sociology, social work, general studies, or a related field AND 4 years of experience equivalent to the County’s class of Group Counselor with at least 1 year at the County’s Group Counselor II level. – OR – Bachelor’s degree AND 2 years experience equivalent to the County’s class of Group Counselor with at least 1 year experience at the County’s Group Counselor II level. Must also possess the following valid certificates: First Aid & CPR Cert.; CA 832PC for limited peace officer status and CA STC Juvenile Counselor Core Course Certificate. Certificates MUST be attached to application.
Licensing & Certifications: Must possess and maintain: a valid CA Class C driver’s license; complete the Supervising Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course of instruction, STC within 1 yr of appointment; and successfully complete additional required certified instruction annually thereafter.
Special Requirements: Must meet the State of CA requirements for peace officer status, including: passing a detailed background investigation with a fingerprint check, having no felony convictions, passing a medical and psychological exam, being at least 18 years of age, being a US citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
Working Conditions: Work rotational shifts including nights, weekends and holidays; the mobility to work in a typical detention or public safety setting and the strength to restrain or eject individuals.
