DESCRIPTION

Summary:
Working under minimal supervision, carries out a variety of moderately complex to complex design assignments, exercising considerable to extensive latitude in the use of initiatives and independent judgment. Prepares sketches or completes detail and layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on product or plant equipment. Works independently on the development of original designs or adaptations requiring specialized experience. May supervise lower level drafters on some phases of design. Typically requires 3 or more years of experience.

Assists in the definition of system requirements; maintains compliance with the customer's specifications. Makes recommendations for component and system testing and development. Supports product launch and resolution of system issues.

DUTIES

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Check dimensions of materials to be used and assign numbers to the materials.
  • Develop detailed design drawings and specifications for mechanical equipment, dies/tools, and controls, using computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment.
  • Lay out and draw schematic, orthographic, or angle views to depict functional relationships of components, assemblies, systems, and machines.
  • Lay out, draw, and reproduce illustrations for reference manuals and technical publications to describe operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Position instructions and comments onto drawings.
  • Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and the procedures and instructions to be followed.
  • Compute mathematical formulas to develop and design detailed specifications for components or machinery, using computer-assisted equipment.
  • Coordinate with and consult other workers to design, lay out, or detail components and systems and to resolve design or other problems.
  • Modify and revise designs to correct operating deficiencies or to reduce production problems.
  • Designs what assembly and test equipment.
  • Conduct research that tests and analyzes the feasibility, design, operation and performance of equipment, components and systems.
  • Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Develop and test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess feasibility, operating condition effects, possible new applications and necessity of modification.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations.
  • Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair to ensure that machines and equipment are installed and functioning according to specifications.
  • Recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Assist drafters in developing the structural design of products, using drafting tools or computer-assisted design/drafting equipment and software.
  • Provide feedback to design engineers on customer problems and needs.
  • Study industrial processes to determine where and how application of equipment can be made.
  • Write performance requirements for product development or engineering projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge & Skills
  • Computers -- Knowledge of Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, ERP systems, CAD applications.
  • Mathematics -- Knowledge of basic arithmetic and statistics, and their application to mechanical engineering.
  • Design -- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Engineering and Technology -- Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Mechanical -- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Systems Analysis -- Determining how a system or process should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.
  • Systems Evaluation -- Identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.
