The Lead LINUX System Administrator will provide development and operational support for the server infrastructure of a large scale railroad dispatching system. In this role, you will be part of a cross-functional team and will ensure the effective delivery of LINUX optimization, migration, & development solutions within a distributed multi-program environment.

Essential Responsibilities
In this role, you will work directly with customer teams as required to define, plan, & execute LINUX-related project and operational activities.
In addition, you will:
  • Provide LINUX administration in the following areas: migration from UNIX, LINUX server deployment, optimization, application design / architecture, customer support
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose advanced LINUX server issues, including reliability issues, performance concerns, software bugs, and hardware failures
  • Assist in the design and implementation of existing and new technologies and services in support of program project initiatives
  • Apply LINUX administration knowledge and experience to ensure IT best practices are consistently applied to the Melbourne server infrastructure architecture and operational support services
  • Proactively apply IT asset lifecycle management and capacity planning practices across the Melbourne server infrastructure to ensure the optimal support of dynamic program requirements
  • Provide VM and storage management guidance to new GE program pursuits
  • Provide oversight and guidance to team of 4 administrators

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in LINUX and UNIX system administration including combinations of the following:
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Red Hat System Administration
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Solaris Unix System Administration
    • Minimum of 2 years of VMWARE Experience – Windows and Linux machines
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Windows System Administration
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience with Veritas Cluster Server, File System, and Volume Manager
    • Minimum of 1 year of Network Experience – working understanding of Firewalls, switches, routers, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as required

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience in building and managing VMware-based virtual server environments
  • Proficiency in building and managing Windows and Linux servers
  • Strong knowledge of and experience in LINUX operational support best practices
  • Practiced troubleshooting and problem analysis of complex LINUX issues
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Experience in mission critical IT operations support environments
  • Ability to effectively interface with all levels of the organization and external customers
