The incumbent is responsible for the care and maintenance of the claims folder and insures that all pertinent records and documents are preserved and are neatly and orderly filled in chronological and non-record material after its initial purpose has been served. Specific duties include but are not limited to: analyzes incoming claims and determines proper disposition and control action; responsible for developing and assembling all evidence required for burial and plot claims; processes dependency questionnaires issued to verify status of dependents of compensation; processes notices of disagreement; processes admission notices; processes requests for evidence; analyzes and processes miscellaneous mail; processes informal claims providing the claimant with the necessary application and stipulating the appropriate time limit; and performs other clerical duties as directed by the Section Chief.

GS-06 Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service during which you performed technical assignments that may have involved the following: communicate verbally or in writing in accordance with accepted rules of business etiquette; independently, organize assigned tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines; gather, organize, compile research and analyze rules and regulations; and employ the basic features of a personal computer (i.e., word processing, spreadsheet and in-house computer applications). Examples of such experience may be gained in fields such as: claims processor/adjuster; legislative/regulatory analyst; administrative/secretarial; benefit administration; insurance; inventory management; paralegal; and quality assurance .

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Applicants must possess training and experience that clearly demonstrates the following knowledge, skills, and abilities. This training and/or experience MUST be reflected by descriptions of your experience in your resume.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a clear and logical manner with people from a variety of backgrounds.
Ability to read, interpret, and analyze,regulations, and data to extract appropriate information from them.
Ability to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information to make logical decisions.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment, establish priorities, and organize work to stay within prescribed time limits.

Applicants will be ranked based on three quality groups, as follows:

Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;

Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job.

Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.

After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group. Qualifying Veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the best qualified group. The best qualified group is the first to be referred to the hiring facility for further consideration and possible interview. The remaining groups may be referred based on the number of applicants available.
