This position is located at the DHS, U. S. Coast Guard, 8th Coast Guard District, Director of Operational Logisitcs, Naval Engineering Support Unit, Industrial Production Facility in New Orleans, LA.
    KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be EPA Certified to handle refrigerants and ozone depleting substances

DUTIES: The incumbent leads and performs air conditioning and refrigerant (AC&R) equipment work in support of the US Coast Guard (USCG), Naval Engineering Support Unit, Industrial Operations Division. Work assignments may include installation, trouble-shooting, repairs, maintenance, overhaul and servicing of variety and complex industrial and commercial air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration systems of various capacities up to 200 tons.

Being a Coast Guard (CG) civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:
  • Connecting gauges to determine the correct setting on controls and if the system is operating to peak efficiency.
  • Replacing and adjusting expansion valves, testing refrigerant lines for leaks, bleeding systems, evacuating and replacing various refrigerant gases in refrigeration and air condition systems to the correct type and amount for efficient operation.
  • Receiving work assignments from the supervisor and passing them on to assigned workers, when necessary demonstrating appropriate work procedures and techniques.
  • Training new employees with little or no AC&R training to accomplish work.
  • Planning the testing procedures, determining the proper kind and type of parts and equipment they need and install and repair a variety of systems with little or no check during the progress of the assignment.
  • Ensuring that tools and equipment are in safe operating condition and all work is performed in a safe manner.
NOTE: The candidate must be EPA Certified to handle refrigerants and ozone depleting substances.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:

  • Ability to lead or supervise (Screen-Out element)
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
  • Knowledge of Materials
