Parsons has won a major construction and renovation contract at the BWI Airport. This phase of the contract and projects with BWI can exceed $150 million in design-build capital improvement expenditures.
Due to contract restrictions Parsons requires candidates in the immediate Baltimore area.
Parsons is seeking a Construction Civil Building Inspector to join our team.
The position, under general supervision, inspects a variety of civil, structural, and architectural building systems being built on the construction site. Solves problems, helps plan and coordinate the work, advises engineers and contractors on potential problems and best solutions. Writes daily reports, documents nonconformance, and helps determine acceptable corrective actions. Enforces compliance with plans, specifications, and codes.
With minimal supervision, performs the most difficult and complex inspection tasks, including assessing adherence to quality control procedures for steel. Inspects various facets of work on the construction site and performs continuous surveillance of assigned construction activities to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Documents nonconformance and participates in determining appropriate resolution. Inspection activities are usually concentrated in one or more of the following areas: soils, concrete, steel, mechanical, or electrical. Frequently serves in the capacity of Lead Inspector. Willingness to travel and/or to relocate to field sites is expected.
Conducts tests to determine if work has been done in accordance with contract specifications and may include any of the following:
Performs civil and structural tests, such as soil compaction, moisture content, aggregation,
graduation, concrete slump, air entrainment, concrete compression, lines and grades surveys, bolt torques, and concrete coring.
Performs destructive and nondestructive tests on metals and other materials through magnaflex, dye-penetrant, radiographic, tension and compression, paint thickness, and resistivity.
Performs surveillance of underground piping to ensure tightness, bedding, and grade.
Inspects and monitors piling installation to ensure location and bearing.
Checks location of reinforcing steel before placement of concrete.
Validates piping systems, including P&ID checks and hydraulic or other pressure tests.
Inspects electrical installations to ensure proper grounding, circuit integrity, and adherence to statutory and customer regulations.
Performs continuing inspection of painting and insulation to ensure thickness and coverage continuity.
Provides general inspection on all construction labor and subcontracted tasks to ensure professional workmanship.
Verifies equipment alignment and balancing operations.
Administers welder qualification tests.
Recommends job safety practices and drafts safety reports.
Prepares quality control reports and recommends changes to procedures.
Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
Requires 4 or more years of related experience on commercial or industrial construction projects, and certification from an independent organization.
Experience as construction foreman also preferred.
Willingness to reside in Baltimore area.
Records in a daily report the quantities and uses of manpower, equipment and materials on site; the occurrence and results of quality inspections or tests performed; the location and type of work performed; conditions or problems that may affect the quality, cost, or progress of the work; visitors to the site and pertinent discussions with them.
Familiar with building codes as they pertain to civil construction, including the ACI, PCA, CRSI, AISC, AWS, BOCA, UBC, ICC, SSPC, ANSI, ASTM, NFPA, OSHA, ADA.
A working knowledge of building demolition, foundation excavation, formwork, concrete reinforcement, concrete placement, masonry, steel fabrication and erection, cold-formed metal framing, composite decks, hardware, metal fabrications, building insulation and waterproofing, roofing, exterior wall systems, carpentry, blocking, gypsum board, windows and doors, glazing, flooring, suspended ceilings, millwork, and painting.
A working knowledge of standard trade practices, including delivery and proper storage of materials; inspection for compliance with codes and specifications; confined space requirements; support of excavation; trenching and backfill for underground lines; and trouble shooting and emergency repair procedures
