Job Responsibilities

This is an opportunity to work with an international research consortium that is studying transmission of a life-threatening mosquito-borne virus in developing countries. The project team at SDSU is developing state of the art model simulations to assess the impact of different prevention strategies in diverse geographic settings. This position is a key member of the simulation development and analysis team that is creating important new analytical tools for the global public health community. Under the direction of the Project Director, this position is responsible for working closely with project scientists to develop the code for running large scale model simulations on a high performance computational cluster. In support of research goals, this person will be responsible for all aspects of code development cycles including, model prototype code development, benchmark and performance diagnostics, iterative model programming and testing in support of the research schedule, ongoing documentation, parallel design tuning, and simulation/cluster performance assessments. Application development will also include simulation configuration and staging tools and post simulation data extraction and automated analytical assessments. This is a project-critical role working with mathematicians/statisticians in the development of a large scale mathematical model of virus transmission designed for running simulations on high performance parallel computing clusters with hundreds of processors.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree (or completion of master's degree by Spring 2013) in computer science, mathematics or a related field. A minimum of 1 year of programming experience in similarly complex applications.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Expert knowledge of Fortran (preferred) and/or C is required with a demonstrated ability to develop complex large-scale parallel applications using MPI. This person should be comfortable and preferably experienced in working closely with research scientists on time-critical projects. Experience and knowledge regarding Linux and Microsoft operating systems, Matlab, and tools for parallel application code under Linux such as MPI, OpenMP, OpenPBS, Torque. Ability to take technical specifications and work independently to develop fully functional code. Ability to work well with the entire project team.

Preferred Education/Certifications

PhD degree with experience in developing and running multi-processor model simulations using Fortran and MPI.

Preferred Experience/Special Skills

3 years of programming experience in similarly complex applications. Experience in the design and development of simulations executed on a high performance computational cluster. Knowledge of data base structures and SQL. Experience with scripting languages such as html, Perl, Python. Experience implementing algorithms that apply concepts in statistics. Experience working with space-time data sets and GIS data.

Working Conditions

This person will work in project office space and computer lab on the SDSU campus. Some travel is possible in later project years.
