Position Summary:

To provide superior service excellence and promote the Elliot Experience to all that accesses the Elliot Health System. Financial Counselors are members of the Patient Access team and are dedicated to facilitating financial assistance in the collection of patient accounts receivables throughout the Elliot Health System. Financial Counselors identify and assist patients who are unable to pay their estimated patient financial responsibility prior to treatment or assist patient through the Elliot Health System Charity Care process.


Understands and articulates the Elliot Health System’s financial protocols, including collection of patient financial responsibility amounts, Medicaid eligibility referrals, Charity Care assistance, payment plans, and self pay discounts

Interprets insurance verification information to estimate patient financial responsibility amounts for scheduled services and inpatient stays

Communicates with patients and family members regarding a patient’s medical coverage and benefits, non-covered services, and patient financial responsibilities

Collects patient financial responsibility amounts including co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles, past due balances and deposits from in-house patients, scheduled outpatients, Urgent Care and ED patients as per the EHS Point of Service Collections guidelines

Collaborates with EHS Case Management, Pre-Service, and Registration teams to identify patients requiring financial assistance or payment arrangements

Performs in-person or telephone interviews with patients to investigate insurance coverage or sponsorship not previously disclosed

Determines patient candidacy for federal / state programs, Charity Care, or other assistance options using set criteria

Serves as a resource for patients during the process of collecting income documentation for financial assistance applications

Tracks incomplete EHS Charity Care applications and follows up with patients to facilitate completion of applications

Collaborates with onsite third-party vendor to assist patients in applying for state and Federal assistance programs

Education and Experience:

Education: Minimum of an associate’s degree in Business or other Healthcare disciplines


Experience: A minimum of (3) three years healthcare experience preferably in Patient

Access F inancial Counseling, Patient Financial Services Collections,

Healthcare Financial Counseling, or Healthcare Collection Agency.

Experience in the coordination of transforming highly diverse work teams.

EPIC experience preferred.
