Yes Job Summary Posting Description CIRES/GSD Professional Research Assistant The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks to fill a professional research assistant(PRA). This position will be within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL), Global Systems Division (GSD) in Boulder, Colorado (office will be in Boulder). The OAR/ESRL mission is to conduct an integrated program of weather and climate research, leading–edge technology development, and other scientific investigations to improve understanding of the Earth system and improve NOAA‚s capability to predict weather and climate phenomena.

NOAA‚s mission also includes scientific education and outreach activities for both the public and K–12 schools to improve scientific literary and understanding of Earth‚s environmental systems. Science On a Sphere® is a technology that assists in this mission. Functional Objective The employee will assist the Science On a Sphere® team with its software development activities. The PRA will function as a computer programmer within the Science On a Sphere® team.

In this capacity the person will become familiar with the operation of SOS and the existing hardware and software architecture, then work with the other developers to implement new features and to debug and enhance existing capabilities. Duties will include: Consulting with management and other team members to understand the requirements for desired new software capabilities * Studying existing software design and implementation in order to understand how best to extend it with new functionality * Writing, testing, and debugging new software, primarily in C++ or Python * Testing the operation of the system, isolating known problems to repeatable test cases * Debugging known problems in the system, implementing and testing solutions * Entering completed code and bug fixes to a software repository * Writing and updating documentation of new software capabilities * Discussing design issues and participating in code reviews with other team members * Supporting customers with problems or issues they may have with their systems The position will be filled as a Professional Research Assistant at the University of Colorado Boulder and will be eligible for employee benefits, including 22 days of vacation (for a 100% position) per year. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor‚s degree in Computer Science or closely related field Required Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and abilities Skills Required: UNIX or Linux programming in C/C++, scripting languages. Skills Preferred: PC hardware, computer graphics, network, database.
