Job Description

Scientist in the Microscopy lab. Responsible for:
Safe operation of the instruments

Appropriate sample preparation

Apply existing lab methods

Troubleshoot problems and perform investigations when necessary

Repair and maintenance of the instruments

Responsible for the advancement of Microscopy for the organization through knowledge of the field and innovative problem-solving

Responsible for the development of new Microscopy techniques to address customer requests

Coordinates and performs projects and analytical testing for materials characterization using SEM/EDS and Optical Microscopy

Investigates out-of-specification results and aberrant data and communicates with client for guidance and follow-up

Plans, performs and completes multiple projects. Confers with peers to create project plans

Provides detailed analysis of microscopy data to help solve complex characterization problems

Generates client reports and supporting documentation (narrative description of objectives, testing and results including the supporting analytical data)

Works collaboratively with experts in other analytical disciplines to provide integrated analytical solutions to complex problems

Clearly communicates technical information and project status to clients and internally through written and oral manner.

Uses computer systems and software programs - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook), data acquisition programs - to acquire and document results

Effectively collaborates with colleagues on laboratory techniques, sample preparation, instrumentation, data analysis, documentation, and safety

Participates in the evaluation and recommendation of new equipment and technology

Ensures compliance of company/client SOP, protocols, safety policies, methods, or other procedures with government rules and regulations

Job Requirements

Experience with and knowledge of Microscopy demonstrated through a combination of industry and academic performance:

BS or MS in Chemistry or related degree

Industry experience in an analytical laboratory doing advanced microscopy work, particularly SEM and SEM/EDS; understanding of optical microscopy and a working knowledge of a range of other analytical techniques preferred; 5-10 years of experience preferred

Must have experience with and knowledge of microscopy to perform analytical methods and solve analytical problems

Experience and knowledge of microscopy instruments, experiments, and data analysis is desired

Excellent organization/multitasking, project management, and communication skills

Excellent teamwork ability to integrate expertise into multi-technique solutions to complex problems

Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical skills, including data interpretation/analysis

Strong computer skills (Windows, MS Office, data acquisition software)

Ability to generate client reports and supporting documentation
