About the Position:
This position is located at the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on the Big Island of Hawaii and serves as a Range Safety Technician with the Mission Support Element Hawaii, Training Support Systems (TSS), Range Division.

Cost of Living Allowance is currently 6.24% and is subject to change.

Travel and transportation costs are not authorized.

This position is designated as drug testing position.

DUTIES:
M ajor Duties:
  • Advises personnel on range conditions such as terrain matters, areas open for reconnaissance and availability for various training tests.
  • Investigates incidences which caused personnel injury or property damage.
  • Informs users of proposed firing problems involving artillery, mortar positions and use of laser tests, training and limited restrictions.
  • Performs maintenance on range and operations equipment.
  • Inspecting ranges and training areas which requires walking in rough terrain and wearing of heavy protective gear.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Specialized experience: To Qualify applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level GS-06 . Specialized experience is defined as: 1) provides technical advice on maintenance problems; and 2) identifies potential problem areas and takes corrective action; and 3) conducts on-site inspections and explains safety procedures.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

SKILL IN OPERATING A COMPUTER

ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ORALLY

KNOWELDGE OF RANGE SAFETY PROCEDURES

KNOWLEDGE OF FIRING RANGE STANDARD OPERATION PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction.

Time in Grade Restriction: Must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the nest lower grade (or equivalent).

Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.

One year trial/probationary period may be required.

Direct Deposit of Pay is Required.

Conditions of employment:
A current State or Federal driver's license is required; must be able to operate both a four-wheel drive vehicle with standard transmission and an off-road all-terrain vehicle.

Work requires driving on hazardous roads and terrain.

Incumbent must be in good physical condition.

Work requires frequent exposure to foul weather conditions.

Duties involve working with or in close proximity to explosives or incendiary material in an environment where munitions training is being conducts, or in close proximity of unexploded ordnance.
Rotation between major training areas, shift work, rotating shifts and weekend/holiday work and overtime may be required.
