Highway Operations Worker

(underfilling Highway Operations Technician 3)

ITD/ Gila Bend Maintenance

Work Location: 1300 E. Pima, Gila Bend, Arizona

This is a training classification with promotional opportunities upon meeting the qualifications for each classification level, and recommendation by the supervisor.

Position Description: This position learns to perform tasks including operations of construction and maintenance type motorized vehicles and equipment appropriate to maintenance; will be working in all types of weather including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind and flood conditions; will work remote locations alone or on a work crew. Job duties include road repair, litter removal, snow removal, repair of fence and guardrail, clean culverts and drains, operate heavy equipment, maintain the highways, etc. Incumbent will be required to wear safety toed boots, hardhat and other appropriate safety equipment. Attends training required to stay current in performing tasks for the position. Overtime will be required; including working nights, weekends, and holidays, work various shifts throughout the year. This position responds to emergency call outs (24 hours a day, seven days a week); must be able to respond to Maintenance yard within 30 minutes. There may be occasional periods of daily or overnight travel.

*Some procedures, practices, and methods of the operation.
*Preventive maintenance and minor repair of vehicles and equipment.
*Federal, state, and agency laws, rules, regulations, and policy and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices, and public contact/customer service practices.
*Materials, chemicals, equipment, and tools used in work activities.
*Work activities and methods/standards.
*Procedures and practices established for the work section.
*Basic math, English, and computer systems.
*Oral and written communication.

Skill in:

*Applying and making minor interpretations of federal, state, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safe practices, and public contact.
*Use of proper materials and tools, vehicles, and equipment to perform work activities within established work methods.
*Oral and written communications.
*Problem solving and interpersonal relationships.

Ability to:

*Applying and making minor interpretations of federal, state, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safe practices, and public contact.
*Use of proper materials and tools, vehicles, and equipment to perform work activities within established work methods.

*Problem solving and interpersonal relationships.

Ideal Candidate: Will have motorized equipment operation experience that is utilized in highway maintenance with Federal, State, County or private contractors; or experience equivalent to a laborer in the public or private sector.

*An Arizona CDL (Class “A” or “B”) permit is required prior to start date.

*An Arizona CDL with N (Tanker) endorsement and certification is required within 1 year.

Note: This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign the Driver Form on page 6 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.

All newly hired employees are subject to the E-Verify Employment Eligibility Verification Program.

RETIREMENT: This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS)*.

*ASRS enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment, if not already an ASRS member at the time of hire.
