The Mental and Behavioral Health Service Line of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System in VISN 23 is seeking a board certified or board eligible Psychiatrist for our In-patient psychiatry.

The incumbent is an integral member of a health care team comprised of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Case Managers and support staff devoted to providing the best possible care to our nations' veterans. You will actively contribute to the mission and goals of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, and the VA Midwest Health Care Network VISN 23.

DUTIES: The Minneapolis VA Healthcare System (MVAHCS) is seeking a full-time General Psychiatrist for the Minneapolis Health Care System, In-patient.

Duties may involve several aspects of general psychiatry and will focus on the evaluations of veterans who suffer from a variety of mental health conditions including, but not limited to post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, dementia, substance abuse, and other related conditions. The successful candidate must be board certified or board eligible in psychiatry.

The staff psychiatrist is responsible to and works under the supervision of the Mental Health & Behavioral Service Line Medical Director. To ensure the highest quality of care by the psychiatrist, there will be periodic peer reviews, clinical outcome evaluations, and a code of ethical practice and evidence of continuing professional development and maintenance of clinical skills.

Position Specific Competencies:

1. The individual must possess the interpersonal and clinical skills to provide primary mental health care for VA patients.

2. Completes intake assessments and formulates diagnosis.

3. Develops and presents treatment plans to the multidisciplinary treatment team.

4. Orders all necessary laboratory and radiological assessments.

5. Initiates consults and referrals as indicated.

6. Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy as indicated in the treatment plan.

7. Maintains effective and up-to-date documentation of patient encounter.

8. Maintains credentials and privileges in the VA hospital.

9. Participates in professional and administrative activities as assigned

Salary is determined by our Physician's Compensation panel at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Licensure and Registration
  • - Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA Educational requirements. Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required. First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed OR Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.

Salary determination will be made by Professional Standard Board of your peers and based on your education, experience, and professional accomplishments.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
