THIS POSITION IS A TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT AND IS NOT COVERED BY THE ARIZONA STATE MERIT SYSTEM. A Temporary Assignment is an appointment to a position which recurs on a temporary or intermittent basis, and is limited to 1500 hours of employment per calendar year. Responsible for providing psychiatric and medical/surgical nursing care directly to inmates; assisting physician's with appointment lines, medication reviews, and physical examinations; transcribing physicians' orders; administering prescribed medications; responding to psychotropic medication emergencies; assessing physical status and administering first aid; monitoring the current condition of patients in seclusion and on watch; participating in quality assurance reviews, and ensuring nursing standards are consistent with philosophy and objectives of the Agency; and performing other duties appropriate to the assignment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA's): KNOWLEDGE: Of psychiatric and general nursing standards; pharmacology with emphasis on psychotropic medications; emergency care; and patient teaching, counseling, and communication techniques. SKILL: In developing individual treatment plans; transcribing physician orders; crisis intervention; and written and verbal communication. ABILITY: To work in a prison environment; establish solid working relationships; and adapt to changing priorities. SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S): Must possess a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in Arizona; a temporary permit will be accepted for appointment, but a license is required for permanent status.

RETIREMENT: Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS)*. * ASRS enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment.
