Job Description:
My name is Alan Berger, Chairman of the Department of
Neurology at the University of Florida College of
Medicine-Jacksonville. I understand that you are a
neurologist with neurocritical care fellowship training,
and invite you to consider the faculty appointment
described below. Certain aspects about the position may
be surprisingly compelling to you as they form an ideal
foundation for a clinical builder who is passionate
about putting his or her mark on a rapidly growing
neurocritical care program located in one of the
nation's largest and fastest growing metropolitan areas.
Collegiality
The Department of Neurology benefits from a 15 year
track record of solid growth and stability, which is the
direct result of a shared vision to build a
traditionally academic department void of rivalry and
unproductive competition among the faculty. The

The department of Neurology enjoys superb
interdisciplinary cooperation with Neurosurgery, Surgery
and Medicine and Interventional and Diagnostic
Neuroradiology. We also benefit from support at the

sense of collective ownership among the faculty which
has become the cornerstone of our culture.
Clinical
Shands Jacksonville Medical Center is a 600 bed hospital
including a level 1 trauma center and one of the
nation's busiest emergency departments. The greater
Jacksonville area population is the fourth largest in
the state of Florida with approximately 1.4 million
people.
Our closed 12 bed Neurocritical care ICU treats patients
with a wide array of conditions, including brain trauma,
ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, subarachnoid
hemorrhage, spinal cord injury, status epilepticus,
neurogenic respiratory failure, and various CNS
infections, and performs post procedure and post
operative monitoring. Attending neurocritical care
physicians are supported by 5 Nurse Practitioners, 12
neurology residents, 2 stroke fellows and collaboration
with attending physicians in adjacent surgical and
medical ICUs.
The stroke program admits 750-950 patients per year from
Duval county and the surrounding counties using
helicopter service. Underlying our aggressive TPA
administration is a well established collaboration with
ED and Radiology. The stroke research program includes
fully integrated nurses who facilitate a wide array of
stroke trials. Our ACGME approved stroke fellowship adds
2 fellows per year of which 1 stroke fellow per month
rotates through the neurocritical care ICU.
Other established programs within the department include
neuromuscular, epilepsy, muscular sclerosis, movement
disorders and neuro ophthalmology. Each has made
significant strides in clinical advancements and
research.
