A dynamic web of technical and management standards forms a landscape on which Microsoft, our partners and competitors deliver products into the marketplace. Some of these standards are known to the general public, e.g., JPEG, MP3, HTML, while our products and our industry rely on hundreds more. Navigating and shaping the standards landscape to support Microsoft’s business objectives requires a mix of technical, business analysis, policy, diplomatic and legal disciplines.
The Corporate Standards Group in Microsoft’s Legal and Corporate Affairs (LCA) group works with business groups to support Microsoft’s strategic participation on the standards landscape. We need a technology and business analyst to define key standards strategies for Microsoft technologies, services and devices. You’ll become an expert about Microsoft’s business and products and the complex relationships between Microsoft products, standards setting organizations, our competitors and government regulators. You’ll use that expertise and your knowledge of technology and business to help LCA provide Microsoft business leaders clear direction and context about how emerging standards affect Microsoft’s business.
We need a pro that can analyze the competitive environment and work closely with Microsoft’s most dynamic business groups to understand their business and technology strategies and the potential for standards engagement to support their business. We’ll ask you to define parts of Microsoft’s strategy for technology standards engagement areas to support Microsoft technologies, services and devices, and to define the positions we should take in technical standards setting conversations worldwide. Then you’ll create and gain support for those engagement plans with the executive management of key Microsoft development and legal teams. Your work will both guide Microsoft standards professionals as they advocate for Microsoft positions in international standards bodies and consortia, and provide support to government and corporate affairs experts as they explain those positions around the world.
Critical skills for this position include demonstrated ability to perform complex qualitative and quantitative analysis, including an in-depth understanding of technology industry business models, write and present in a clear and insightful manner, and champion multiple deliverables and deadlines. You should be able to apply a breadth of tools, data sources and analytical techniques to answer a wide range of high-impact business questions and present the insights in concise and effective manner. The successful candidate will also possess the ability to synthesize and analyze multiple industry trends to create scenarios of potential developments, and then track those scenarios over time. Ideal candidates will have a solid grasp of the enterprise software industry, cloud business models, and a good understanding of Microsoft’s position.
•Master’s degree in Business, Economics or Finance and 6+ years of related experience; or an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Economics or Finance, and 8+ years related experience

•Excellent communication skills with the capacity to influence without direct authority
•Strong, proven analytical, market sizing and writing skills, with database management skills highly desirable

A successful candidate will be able to:
•Analyze the role of specific standards efforts in the technology market, and the interplay of those standards with our competition and governments worldwide.
•Stay current on new industry developments affecting technology needs and to quickly analyze and understand complex technical architectures.
•Synthesize primary and secondary sources of data into forecasting assumptions, i.e. - ability to quantify qualitative information.
•Become an expert on the business impact of the policy, political and personal landscape in international standards.
•Interpret financial statements (income statement, cash flow, commentary.)
•Write clear and compelling briefs and analysis reports
•Present confidently and effective to technical executive management
•Manage multiple projects on conflicting deadlines
•Deal with ambiguity and uncertainty
