Position Summary:
The University of New Mexico (UNM), the state's flagship institution, seeks an experienced and dynamic leader to serve as Vice Provost of Extended Learning. Units reporting directly to the Vice Provost include Distance Education Programs and Services, which includes Evening/Weekend, Summer, and Intersession Programs, and Continuing Education and Community Services. The Vice Provost reports to the Provost and serves as a member of UNM's senior executive leadership team. UNM's legacy began in 1889 and currently educates 35,000 students annually through its main and branch campuses, as well as statewide, regionally, nationally, and globally. UNM offers a comprehensive set of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs through its Health Sciences Center, Law School, professional schools of Architecture & Planning, Engineering, Anderson School of Management, Education, and other academic colleges. Every academic school and college at UNM delivers courses via distance education technologies. The University emphasizes STEMH education and has a Carnegie Basic Classification of "Research University with Very High Research Activity". As such, UNM is one of only two institutions nationally which is both a USDE minority-serving institution and a USDE institution with high Hispanic enrollment, as well as an HACU Hispanic-serving institution. As a comprehensive research university UNM offers unique possibilities for work in the areas of alternative energies, healthcare, and diversity and cultural opportunities with Hispanic and indigenous peoples. The Vice Provost provides vision and leadership to advance UNM in distance education by reaching out to national and global audiences. The Vice Provost strategically guides UNM in creating access to UNM's degree programs and services utilizing distance education technologies. The Vice Provost provides vision and leadership for Continuing Education and Community Services in its mission of creating workforce training through certificate programs and in the area of personal enrichment. Under the Vice Provost's leadership both Distance Education and Continuing Education units need to reach out to both traditional and non-traditional students. The Vice Provost is expected to build upon established relationships within all academic units to support and expand distance education efforts locally, regionally, nationally, and globally. The Vice Provost will continue to build on UNM's 2+2 relationships with in-state community colleges to meet the vast educational needs of New Mexico. The Vice Provost will ensure UNM's continued partnership with New Mexico's comprehensive and research universities and with other major universities throughout the United States and globally to meet the needs of learners through the use of current and emerging technologies. The Vice Provost will work closely with public and private sectors in the Greater Albuquerque area and throughout the state to continue to create educational opportunities to develop the workforce necessary for current and future jobs. The Vice Provost is responsible for approximately $20 million in operational funds and oversees a staff of over 150 full-time, part-time, and on-call employees. Collectively, over 130,000 student credit hours are currently generated annually under the Vice Provost's purview through distance education and through summer, evening/weekend, and intersession courses. Distance education teaches more than 950 wholly online sections as well as a wide variety of interactive television, correspondence, and off-site face-to-face courses. An additional 30,000 continuing education students are served in professional development or personal enrichment opportunities in the Albuquerque metropolitan area and throughout New Mexico. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate or other terminal degree in your field OR - Master's degree in a related field (i.e. IT, business, computer science, etc.) and at least 10 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. NOTE: Tenure appointment is contingent upon meeting the tenure requirements of the requested home college or department at the University of New Mexico.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three or more years concurrent experience in a senior leadership role in the fields of distance education and continuing education - Demonstrated experience in strategic leadership, planning and management of complex units with multiple departments - Demonstrated experience in fiscal management, implementation and use of Responsibility Centered Management (RCM) and accountability of a multi-million dollar higher education enterprise - Demonstrated experience in information technology management - Demonstrated knowledge of emerging e-learning solutions impact on higher education, to include massively open online courses - Demonstrated experience in distance education and continuing education program evaluation strategies and models
