Description

The industrial design development engineer for the Tablets will support PSG industrial design group by driving the development of ElitePad and future tablet solutions for the commercial and enterprise business. This role is regarded as a hands-on technical expert. In this highly visible role, you will have direct frequent communication and collaboration with HP Industrial Design, Product Design, Manufacturing Design and worldwide suppliers.

Designs, analyzes, develops, modifies and evaluates materials, mechanical systems, equipment and packaging. Conducts feasibility, design margin and validation analysis and empirical testing on new and modified designs. Leads and/or assists in architecture development and assessment. Evaluates reliability of materials, properties, designs, and techniques used in production. May direct support personnel and/or partner organizations in the preparation of detailed design, design testing, prototype fabrication, and production tooling.

Responsibilities

Develops organization-wide architectures and methodologies for mechanical and thermal design and development across multiple platforms and organizations within the Global Business Unit.

Identifies and evaluates new technologies, innovations, and outsourced development partner relationships for alignment with technology roadmap and business value; creates plans for integration and update into architecture.

Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with technology and development guidelines and standards; integrates suggestions, updates, and innovations into overall architecture.

Leverages recognized domain expertise, business acumen, and experience to influence decisions of executive business leadership, outsourced development partners, and industry standards groups.

Provides guidance and mentoring to less-experienced staff members to set an example of mechanical and thermal design innovation and excellence.

Mechanical Engineering focus areas:
Develop and engineering for next generation of ElitePad tablet

Collaborate with industrial design to develop chassis designs and mechanical layouts for next generation products.

Lead efforts with world wide suppliers to develop and standardize cross platform components.

Process Development focus areas:
Surface Finishing -Develop new processes are the area of blasting, tumbling, polishing, lapping, anodizing etc.

Glass Processing -Develop new processes for glass scribe/break, CNC grinding, lapping, chemical strengthening, ink decoration, PVD coatings etc.

Automation -Develop new automation across PC notebooks, slates manufacturing. Identify automation opportunities and justify automation projects, identify world-class automation integrators, define automation project scope and deliverables, support the qualification of equipment at suppliers.

CNC machining -Develop all CNC milling and turing processes. Scope appropriate CNC equipment to be used, develop CNC fixtures, implement touch probing, own the reduction of cycle time, development of advanced cutters and coatings, High Speed Machining implementation, support the programming and optimization of all CNC-related activities at contract manufacturers worldwide.

Painting -Develop all paint processes to achieve cosmetic and surface durability requirements. Scope and specify paint equipment, environmental clean room requirements, evaluate and select most appropriate paints and painting parameters to ensure quality and yield requirements are met.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering

Minimum 10+ years experience
