Program: Transfer School: Mott Haven Community High School, Bronx, NY
General Overview: A Transfer School is a small,
academically rigorous, full-time New York City Department of Education program
designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited
or have dropped out of high school. East Side House, Inc. is directly
responsible for the administration of the program’s Learning-to-Work Program,
which enhances the academic component by offering additional academic support,
career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and
internships.
Under the
supervision of the Program Director with latitude for independent judgment, the
advisor will be responsible to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are
representative of the knowledge, skills and ability required, but are not
limited to:
Duties and Responsibilities:
Solicit, develop and
cultivate internship and or job opportunities within the community
including use of cold calls and visits to employers.
Establish liaisons
with corporate and nonprofit organizations for identification of
employment and internship opportunities, and to provide workshops and
mentoring opportunities for students including coordination with other
community youth employment assistance programs.
Maintain ongoing
contact with employers to learn of new internship and/or employment needs
as well as problems arising from existing placements.
Maintain records of
position vacancies and successful employment applications.
Assist students in
developing and achieving life/career goals that are assessed throughout
training and during career exploration.
Assist students in job
search, including resume and cover letter development, search strategies
and interviewing skills.
Maintain database
tracking and reporting of each student’s progress and measurable outcomes
including timely entry of case notes of weekly meetings and incidents, and
employment.
Prepare and present
curriculum to students on job readiness and related topics; facilitate
interactive advisory groups
Provide case
management services for the students in the program.
Attend weekly meetings
with Adult Education Services staff to review students’ progress and
discuss appropriate trainings and intervention plans. Actively
participate in initiatives, affiliations, coalitions, etc. that pertain to
East Side House’s mission.
Education, Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
B.A from an accredited College
Preferred experience in vocational counseling /
human resources recruitment.
Computer proficient in Excel and Word
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
