The Reliability Standards Engineer assists the Manager of Reliability Standards in promoting SPP’s reliability excellence through the development and refinement of these reliability standards.

The Reliability Standards Engineer provides additional leadership in the national effort to develop meaningful and achievable reliability standards. The Engineer actively participates, facilitates, influences and coordinates SPP, its members and registered entities in the development, refinement, maintenance, communication, training and implementation of national and regional reliability standards and policies.

  • Review proposed North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC) or SPP RE regional standards in order to understand and communicate the impact of proposed standards on SPP and its members
  • Formulate comments to standards through the solicitation and coordination of responses from SPP staff and stakeholders
  • Assist in implementing strategic direction and matrix management for SPP staff engaged in reliability standards efforts across the corporation
  • Assist in the coordination of technical expertise of SPP Working Groups engaged in reliability standards
  • Assist in the coordination of SPP Regional Entity and Compliance department in the identification of most frequently violated reliability standards by SPP members and registered entities with goal of improving compliance
  • Assist in the coordination of Compliance and Interregional Affairs staff in the proper application, implementation and interpretation of current and future reliability standard requirements
  • Coordinate with the Stakeholder Services Group to conduct appropriate training for the corporation, its members and registered entities on the compliance applicability of reliability standards
  • Propose new and/or improved reliability standards pursuant to the NERC or regional standard development process as applicable
  • Assist in measuring and providing statistics regarding violations of reliability standards by SPP member and registered entities
  • Review and provide input on NERC and regional reliability standards under development
  • Represent SPP and its members’ interests in NERC and regional reliability standard development processes and activities
  • Develop SPP comments on proposed bulk power system reliability standards and provide input to regulatory filings related to such standards
  • Analyze and communicate the impact of proposed standards, interpretations or modifications to SPP staff and members
  • Work jointly with other IRC representatives in a consensus building environment to develop positions on NERC reliability standards and reliability-related companion NAESB standards
  • Coordinate with appropriate SPP staff to seek technical expertise for review and comments on NERC reliability standards and reliability related NAESB standards
  • Serve as SPP representative on applicable NERC, NAESB and IRC committees and working groups

Requirements: Education & Experience Requirements :
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • 4 to 7 years of relevant work experience with a minimum of 3 years in bulk power systems engineering, operations and/or markets
Required :
  • Understanding of NERC and SPP Criteria, Standards and Procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, stakeholders and senior management
  • Demonstrate highest standards of ethical behavior
  • Understanding of and compliance with SPP Policies and Procedures
Preferred :
  • Experience in electric regulatory forums and understanding of transmission tariffs highly desired
Travel Requirement:
  • This position requires moderate travel (approximately 30%).
