Special Note: This position is located in Northwest Arkansas, not in Little Rock.
The Laboratory Assistant has the ability to collect blood and urine specimens, receive, process, and aliquot laboratory specimens, transport specimens to the appropriate area of the laboratory (both before and after lab testing is performed), manage consumable material restocking, assist hospital personnel in specimen collection procedures, as well as perform other duties as assigned (i.e. processing send out specimens, performing micro set ups, etc.). The Laboratory Assistant has the ability to work independently or with minimum supervision and performs both inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy procedures.
Collects blood/urine specimens
Performs blood collection using proper technique as outlined in policy/procedure.
Collects appropriate volumes and tube types as specified per test.
Collects sample tubes in appropriate draw order as specified in procedure.
Maintains confidentiality and patient privacy during specimen collection.
Interacts professionally with patients and families to provide age appropriate instructions for education of blood collection procedures.
Practices universal precautions/ isolation techniques according to hospital policy.
Collects and processes laboratory specimens as needed during clinic operation.
Maintains clean, well-stocked phlebotomy supply tray in standardized layout.
Maintains clean, well-stocked phlebotomy storage area.
Collects urine specimens from infants/toddlers using proper technique or urine collection bags as outlined in policy/procedure.
Processes specimens/performs specified tasks and tests.
Labels specimens correctly according to policy.
Delivers specimens with appropriate requisition to the designated location either by utilizing tube system or hand carry.
Assists with maintaining a clean orderly patient/department environment
Appropriately troubleshoots specimen variances according to policy.
Performs the tasks of handling, packing, storage and shipping of specimens to local and referral labs for testing.
Perform specimen set-up.
Maintains supplies and performs preventive maintenance.
Stocks phlebotomy cabinet/tray/box on a daily basis.
Stocks phlebotomy draw room and storage are on a daily basis.
Maintains clinic/lab stock weekly and notifies supervisor of any stocking problems.
Performs all required documentation of specimen variances.
Collects/documents appropriate QA/QI data as requested.
Performs other clerical duties (copying,stamping,filing,mailing,recording instrument readings,etc)
Collects and transmits surveillance data.
Performs clerical and telephone duties as appropriate. Documents Quality Control and collects surveillance data.
Answers calls in a courteous manner and routes calls to appropriate staff.
Performs clerical duties as assigned.
Practices cost effective use of supplies
Utilizes available communication tools (OA, staff meetings, bulletin boards) to remain informed
Trains new staff as necessary
Other duties as assigned
Performs family/hospital personnel education/training.
Explains procedures to parent and patient and or hospital personnel.
Answers questions within area of practice.
Interacts appropriately according to age competency recommendations.
Provides training and competency assessment for new laboratory/clinic personnel within area of practice as assigned by supervisor.
High school degree/GED equivalent
Must have at least one month phlebotomy and laboratory experience. Pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred. PCT experience preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Phlebotomy certificate preferred, if applicable to position.
Special Skills: (typing, data entry, word processing etc.)
Ability to process and sort specimens.

Ability to recognize inappropriate orders, specimens, requisitions, and follow established corrective procedures.
Ability to recognize STAT and URGENT requests and process in appropriate manner.
Ability to organize and perform various tasks simultaneously.
Ability to read, write, and speak English and accurately read and write numbers and perform basic laboratory math.
Ability to appropriately interface with families, patients, visitors, and clinic staff.
Ability to read, comprehend, and perform procedures according to procedure manuals.

Ability to sit or stand for prolong periods of time and move quickly.
