The University Development publications editor researches, compiles, writes, edits, and/or copy-edits high-profile advertising and editorial materials in support of the university's fundraising function. She or he will serve as the primary editor of Impact magazine, the Virginia Tech Foundation's annual report, and the annual report for the Office of the Vice President for Development and University Relations. The publications editor is a regular contributor to high-profile university publicity outlets, both print and online, including Virginia Tech Magazine and the spotlight slot for stories on www.vt.edu. As a lead creator of advertising/promotional materials for university fundraising, the publications editor coordinates the efforts of photographers, graphic designers, and Web editors in order to help achieve the strategic communication aims of University Development. The publications editor also writes and/or edits special projects as assigned, such as gift proposals, white papers, and news releases.
Master's degree in journalism, English, communications, or related field, or an equivalent level of training/experience coupled with a bachelor's degree. Comprehensive knowledge of English grammar. Working knowledge of one or more professional writing style(s), such as Associated Press or Chicago. A strong record of progressive experience in todayâ??s communication fields, including demonstrated reporting, writing,and editing skills. Knowledge of publications and graphic design principles. Proficiency with current office computer software such as MS Word and Excel, and familiarity with Web or graphic design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Web content management systems. Ability to work under pressure, oversee multiple projects, and meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a variety of people.
Previous experience working in communications within a university/higher education setting. Previous experience in online mediums, including social media. Previous experience related to fundraising. Previous experience in advertising or promotional copywriting. Previous experience writing news or feature articles for newspapers, magazines, or websites with a significant readership.
