POSITION SUMMARY:
Teach innovative 4-H Youth Development science and technology programs for youth including, but not limited to, plant and natural sciences, environmental sciences, sustainability, GIS/GPS at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center, in schools, libraries and other community settings.

Participate in discussions and provide input surrounding the planning of existing special interest educational programs and events, including, but not limited to, 4-H environmental science projects and fairs and festivals.

Assist with the delivery and daily supervision of science and technology related programs during school vacations, including the summer.

Work as a team member to provide input surrounding program evaluation to determine the science and technology related programs that are needed by schools, libraries, youth organizations and community groups.

Respond to program inquiries. Establish program schedules and make appropriate program related purchases.

Assist with the training of volunteers and interns who are interested in working in the environmental sciences program area.

Provide educational programming for Independent Living Group Home (IGHL) residents that come to the farm for vocational training in horticulture, plant science and greenhouse management.

Provide input and participate in discussions regarding the revision of existing marketing materials such as program flyers and brochures.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Program Management and Coordination: 10%

Participate in discussions and provide input surrounding existing science and technology related programs at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center, in schools, libraries, and other community settings.

Serve as lead person for team of educators, assistants, or volunteers in the delivery of science and technology related programs during school vacations, including the summer.

Responsible for program organization including scheduling and training of staff, purchasing supplies, preparing materials, set-up and clean-up of program areas.

Recruit and train volunteers to provide support during programs.

Subject Matter Resource and Program Delivery: 80%

Administrative Management (Finance, Budget): 5%

Complete purchase orders.

Attend meetings, Association special events and participate in staff development opportunities, as requested.

Professional Improvement and other duties as assigned: 5%

In cooperation with supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address change in programming and association priorities.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate's Degree and 2 years related volunteer or work experience; or High School Diploma and 4 years volunteer or work experience.

Experience working with a variety of age groups of youth.

Belief in the importance of youth development programs and their impact on the lives of children, youth, families and the professional who work with them.

Ability to teach youth, adults and developmentally delayed adults.

Ability to communicate effectively with other professionals, staff, volunteers, youth and the general public, both orally and in writing.

Ability to deliver research-based information in a creative, understandable and informative manner to youth and adult audiences.

Ability to and the interest in learning. Willingness to learn new subject matter.

Ability to work as a team member and to work with staff, volunteers, and/or interns.

Computer literacy.

Ability to train and manage staff in programming.

Ability to meet travel requirements of the position.

Ability to work a flexible schedule that is based on the demands of the program, including some evenings, weekends and holidays.

Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Environmental Sciences or related field.

Ability to or interest in learning to operate farm equipment, such as a tractor.
