DUTIES:
This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service at the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System Tuskegee, AL. In this position you will perform a variety of duties in the Allied Health Services in support of the Nutrition and Food Service, and on the patient care units in support of the clinical dietitians. These duties require knowledge of the principles of nutrition in health and disease, knowledge of nutrition education and counseling techniques, knowledge of food preparation, service, and delivery, modified diet terminology and restrictions and computer operations.
The major duties and responsibilities include:
Printing lists, reports, labels, and tray tickets following established schedule;
Adjusting diet patterns to meet patients' individual preferences, tolerances and restrictions;
Conducting patient education and counseling;
Calculating results of patient nutrient intake studies;
Documenting care plan in the medical record;
Interviewing patient to obtain information on food-related allergies and intolerances, alterations in appetite, unplanned weight change, etc.;
Calculating patients' calories and caloric needs;
Evaluating and recording patients' understanding of nutritional counseling; and
Performing other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: M-F 8:00am - 4:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. The English Language proficiency statement appears on the Assessment Questionnaire.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have successfully completed a course of study in an accredited college leading to an associates degree in Dietetic Technology with an emphasis in Nutrition Care or the equivalent post-secondary education. Education must have included instruction in nutrition care/diet therapy, the natural sciences (e.g., anatomy, physiology, biochemistry), social sciences (e. g., psychology, sociology), food sciences, medical terminology, communications and education. In addition, qualifying education must include supervised field experience in a hospital or similar clinical setting.
EVALUATION OF EDUCATION: An associates degree in Dietetic Technology (Nutrition Care) from a program approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) is preferred. Because the occupational study on which this standard is based showed graduates of these programs to be better equipped to provide substantive assistance and support to Clinical Dietitians, candidates demonstrating possession of this will be given preferential consideration in the applicant evaluation process.
Applicants with an associates degree in Dietetic Technology without a designated subspecialty which included instruction in the subjects described in the preceding "Education Requirements" section , also meet minimum requirements.
Individuals holding a Bachelors degree in Dietetics also meet the requirements of this position, but if it lacks the associate degree Dietetic Technician programs it will not be given preferential consideration in the applicant evaluation process.
Candidates with an associates degree in Dietetic Technology with an emphasis in Food Service Management generally do not possess the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) required in a CDT position unless their degree has been supplemented by additional courses in nutrition care or by clinical experience which demonstrates possession of the required KSAOs.

To qualify for the GS-5 grade level you must meet one of the following: You must have at least six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level which must be close to the work of this job and has required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques to successfully perform the duties of this position. Qualifying specialized experience may include: interviewing patients and using pre-established criteria to identify patients at nutritional risk; gathering information from, and documenting in the medical record; developing nutritional care plans for patients not at nutritional risk; monitoring and assisting in the evaluation of food intake; adjusting meal patterns and nourishments for selected patients to accommodate preferences and tolerances; counseling selected patients about their prescribed diets; and teaching selected classes for groups of patients. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Knowledge of routine diets and diet restrictions; and knowledge of nutrition/medical terminology.
Skill in performing various clerical duties in a medical office.
Ability to communicate with individuals from varying backgrounds and with various medical and physical
Knowledge of Nutrition and Food Services computer software programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Much of the work is sedentary - the person in this position may sit comfortable to do most of the work. There is periodic walking throughout the hospital, standing, and carrying light items such as medical records and instructional materials.
