About This Job
As a systems operations engineer, you will work on a small team challenged with growing Polyvore’s hardware and commercial/open-source software infrastructure, meeting the increased capacity demands of a growing visitor base, and supporting the expansion of polyvore.com into new verticals and regions. You will actively work on capacity planning, updating the infrastructure to ensure that polyvore.com is extremely fast and reliable. You will be responsible for designing and owning systems that monitor and alarm for errors or capacity problems throughout the infrastructure. You will work directly with configuration management tools like Puppet to ensure that new software and servers can be provisioned quickly, and are up to date and secure. As a systems operations engineer, you will participate in a rotating on-call pager schedule, ensuring that production-affecting issues are dealt with quickly and professionally.
Linux server administration
Advanced scripting using BASH and/or Perl
Puppet or other configuration management suites
Monitoring and data-collection tools like Nagios, Collectd, and Graphite
Use of SQL, understanding of relational databases
Management of RAID arrays, and other server provisioning tasks
IP networking and basic routing
Nice to have
Multi-color web application infrastructure and scaling
Debian package management, building of custom packages, kickstarting
Use of Akamai or other content delivery networks
Use of AWS services such as EC2 and S3
Managing/tuning Java processes running under a JVM (Heap, GC, etc)
Administration of the following systems:
MySQL, Cassandra, Hadoop and/or Solr
Squid, Nginx, and Memcache
OpenLDAP, BIND9, DHCPD
