The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) is a long-term national health study that has focused on strategies for preventing heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, and osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women. These chronic diseases are the major causes of death, disability, and frailty in older women of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds.

WHI is looking for someone who is well-rounded technically, has experience developing and maintaining Oracle Forms and Reports applications in the Oracle Database 10/11g multi-instance environments, is proficient in complex SQL and PL/SQL, and has working knowledge of data modeling and database design. You must work both independently and collaboratively, and be willing to contribute in areas outside of the typical developer role. The WHI Database Team supports the core WHI study as well as dozens of ancillary and related studies. Our mission is to collect and maintain the highest quality data in support of this important research, from application design through the delivery of analytic data sets.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain custom Oracle Forms and Reports applications
  • Gather and analyze requirements
  • Determine functional specifications
  • Design and develop solutions
  • Write and maintain complex SQL and PL/SQL
  • Write and maintain stored procedures and packages
  • Prepare and document analytic data sets
  • Support lead developers as needed
  • Participate in projects to advance the team’s technical capabilities, including java-based web development

Qualifications
Required
  • 2+ years of experience with Oracle PL/SQL
  • 2+ years of experience in custom application development with Oracle Forms and Reports 10/11g
  • Demonstrated expertise in writing and tuning complex SQL queries
  • Ability to analyze, design, program and implement custom database applications
  • Working knowledge of Oracle Database 10/11g concepts and data modeling
  • Expertise in PL/SQL stored procedures and packages
  • Experience with ETL (SQL Loader, transformation, SQL*Plus data extraction scripts)
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, with a strong proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability and desire to work both independently and in within team dynamics
  • Energetic self-starter with high initiative to solve problems and meet goals
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and follow through while working on multiple projects
  • Attention to detail and commitment to data quality
  • Quick learner who strives to get up to speed quickly
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and aggressive timelines
Preferred
  • B.S. in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Windows platform (desktop and servers)
  • Oracle Application Server, Weblogic Server, Fusion Middleware
  • Java web application development with JSF and JPA
  • Java programming
  • JSP, CSS, HTML
  • Data warehousing concepts
