Position Title: Director of Development

Department: College of Medicine

Division: Constituent Programs

Reports To: Vice President for Constituent Programs

Supervises: Senior Development Officer I, Development Officer II

Position Purpose

The Director of Development, College of Medicine will strategically design and execute a personal solicitation program resulting in philanthropic support by maximizing the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects at the $100,000 and up level. This individual will be expected to uphold and exemplify the operating practices and mission of the Foundation.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Serving as the chief strategist, develops, oversees and coordinates the fundraising plans of the College with the Dean of Medicine and the Vice President for Constituent Programs for the FSU Foundation
  • Maintains a portfolio of prospects with a giving capacity of $100,000 or more
  • Secures gifts and pledges from alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends of FSU
  • Supervises a team of major gift fundraisers in developing support for the College of Medicine, and in general, for the University
  • Assists FSU Foundation development officers in developing and coordinating cross-disciplinary gifts for multi-college/organizational needs
  • Prepares proposals and gift agreements as required for proper gift documentation
  • Reviews gift agreements for proper gift documentation
  • Supervises the College of Medicine fundraising staff, to include monitoring performance metrics
  • Leads staff in establishing a philanthropically focused, supportive work environment
  • Develops and manages the cost centers budget under the direction of the Vice President of Constituent Development for the FSU Foundation
  • Facilitates meetings, initiating up to date communications, informational exchanges and project / philanthropic coordination with the faculty and faculty chairs of the College of Medicine
  • Prepares correspondence with prospects and all contact reporting in a professional and timely manner
  • Maintains donor interest and enthusiasm through stewardship activities
  • Develops a volunteer structure in support of the divisions fund raising efforts
  • Ensures direct activities with prospects are designed to enhance the affiliation between the prospect and the University
  • Coordinates with FSU Foundation colleagues to identify prospects for planned giving, corporate and foundation giving, and major giving
  • Coordinates an annual giving plan for the College of Medicine with the FSU Foundations Director of Annual Giving
  • Effectively communicates organizations mission and represents the organizations culture to external stakeholders.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelors degree required; Advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in major gift development in a university setting
  • Minimum of three years supervisory experience required
  • Campaign experience preferred
  • Proven success in the closure of principal gifts at the $100,000 and above level
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office products suite

Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Must be conversant with FSU alumni, faculty and staff members with similarly qualified educational backgrounds
  • A self-starter, comfortable working independently
  • Maintain consistent and positive communication with the Dean of Medicine and Foundation staff
  • Facilitate strong communications with alumni, including letters, surveys and telephone solicitation programs
  • Excellent communication skills to include effective and persuasive writing, public speaking and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities

  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

  • Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
