Provide on-site support to DOD HPC users in theComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Computational Technology Area (CTA). The CFDCTA covers high performance computations whose goal is the accurate numericalsolution of the equations describing liquid and gas motion and the related useof digital computers in fluid-dynamics research. Work in the CFD CTAencompasses all velocity flow regimes and scales of interest to the DOD.Incompressible flows are generally slow, e.g., governing the dynamics ofsubmarines, slow airplanes, pipe flows, and air circulation. Compressible flowsare important at higher speeds, e.g., controlling the behavior of transonic andsupersonic planes, missiles, and projectiles. Fluid dynamics itself displayssome very complex physics, such as boundary-layers, transition to turbulence,and turbulence dynamics that require continued scientific research. CFD alsomust incorporate additional complex physics to adequately model many real worldproblems. These effects include changes of phase, changes of chemicalcomposition, and interactions among multiple phases in heterogeneous flows.Some relevant examples of these physical complexities include large geographicscales, wind driven free surfaces, sediment laden flows, and chemicallyreacting propulsor flows. CFD has no restrictions on the geometry and includesmotion and deformation of solid boundaries defining the flow. In this position, CFD is used for basicstudies of fluid dynamics for engineering design of complex flow systems, formodeling flow and transport in porous media, coastal hydrology, shallow-waterflows, free surface flows and fluid-structure interactions at low to moderateReynolds number. It is also used to interpret and analyze experimental data andto extrapolate into regimes that are inaccessible or too costly to study. This position will primarily support localusers; however, opportunities exist for supporting CFD users at remote sites.
  • Expertise in HPC and parallel programming with currenttechniques (MPI, OpenMP, shmem, coarray Fortran, UPC, CUDA, OpenACC) andperformance analysis tools (TAU, HPCtoolkit, craypat), proficiency in using variousprogramming languages for scientific applications (Fortran, C/C++, python) anddebuggers (gdb, totalview, ddt, valgrind), visualization tools (ParaView,Ensight, FieldView, VisIt), mesh generation skills (Gridgen, Pointwise,SolidMesh, AFLR, gambit, gridPro, tetgen, gmsh, MeshLab), and a knowledge ofvarious numerical algorithms (FEM, FVM, FDM) are highly valued. Knowledge of the physics and currenttechnology of groundwater modeling, coupled surface-groundwater models, coastalcirculation, storm surge modeling, free-surface modeling and fluid-structureinteraction with application to flows in channels, locks, and other hydraulicstructures is advantageous. Experiencewith aerodynamics applications will be considered.
    Ability to coordinate technical/scientific resources, preparescientific and technical reports at both the detailed and the “management”level, use a collaborative style to achieve consensus, and to work well withpeople are required.
  • Candidate should have a MS or Ph.D. in Aeronautical orMechanical Engineering, and some experience in computational science.
  • Security Clearance Required: U.S. Citizenship required. Candidate must have or beable to successfully obtain a clearance at the Secret level.
