The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is actively recruiting a Superior candidate for the position of MEDICAL CARE LINE Nurse Executive. The Medical Care Line Nurse Executive reports to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services and is a member of the Medical Care Line Executive Team with responsibility and accountability for the coordination of nursing care provided, establishing policy and procedures and assuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. This experienced nurse leader will provide organizational leadership skills to mentor and develop a highly effective workforce to improve system operations and support strategic planning/performance measure initiatives.

The Medical Care Line encompasses Inpatient Medical Nursing Units, Oncology Unit, Critical and Medical Intensive Care Units, Hemodialysis Unit, and Specialized Ambulatory Care Clinics.

The candidate chosen for this position will function in an advanced managerial role is of an executive nature, comprised of complex leadership and administrative components within a specified care line(s), associated with critical health care and nursing practice issues and activities that influence the organizational mission, health care, and policy.

Responsibilities include coordinating and monitoring nursing care, establishing best practices, policies, and procedures, and assuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. The individual will be accountable for the provision, management, and monitoring of nursing care within the Medical Care Line in the MEDVAMC facility. This executive managerial role includes administrative duties that contribute to and influence the V.A.'s mission, systems operations, strategic planning, performance measure initiatives, health care delivery, and policies of MEDVAMC.

Nurse IV Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of 6 Years nursing experience in Medical-Surgical and/or Critical-Care Nursing with progressive managerial and executive level experience. (Required)
  • Master’s degree in nursing or masters in related field with a BSN (NLN accredited) and approximately 6 years of successful progressive managerial and leadership experience. (Required)
  • Doctoral degree in nursing or related field (Regionally accredited university or college) and approximately 3-4 years of successful progressive managerial and leadership experience.
