Job Description Software development Engineer – Mining Knowledge from Amazon’s massive product catalog What would you do if you had access to the world’s largest product catalog (1 billion products, 10 billion third party supplied data records)? Amazon’s Search and Browse Experience group is looking for exceptional software engineers to develop large scale data mining solutions aimed at building high quality knowledge bases mined out of our massive product catalog. We are currently in the process of building the world’s largest Brands knowledge base comprising of a list of known good brands, their synonyms, and other first class relationships. Building these rich knowledge bases provides Amazon the critical strategic advantage of providing state of the art product discovery experiences, target highly relevant ads, and partner with our sellers in coming up with creative merchandising opportunities.

Our vision is to continue building knowledge bases around other entities like Authors and Artists that will be the basis of our future product discovery experiences. This is a unique position that provides an opportunity to bring data mining techniques to a scale rarely available anywhere else and drive creative end user experiences for millions of customers. As part of this team you will encounter:Algorithms and Systems: We use data mining and knowledge representation techniques to mine large scale data leveraging Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.Data analysis: We constantly dig into the data available at Amazon to analyze, inform and develop solutions to the right problems. If looking at data, slicing and dicing it in multiple ways and coming up with interesting insights are something you thrive upon, you will fit right in.Scalability: We process billions of product data records weekly.

Making sure the systems we built are able to handle these large amounts of data while meeting the time budget constraints is a given for any work we take on!As a developer in this team, you will have the opportunity to:Participate in the roadmap definition for the teamWrite high quality code, participate in code reviews, design/architect systems of varying complexity and scope, and create high quality documentation supporting the design/coding tasks. Identify areas of improvement in our frameworks, tools, processes and strive to make them better. Evaluate our success metrics and evolve our reporting systems. Dive deep into the catalog data, understand different functional areas, and use your creativity to come up with data mining techniques that improve the quality of Amazon’s product catalog.

Basic Qualifications Bachelors in Computer Science or related field4+ years of experience in software development and full product life-cyclesCoding skills in Java/C++ coupled with strong base in object-oriented design and development Preferred Qualifications PhD/MS/Bachelors in Computer Science or related field6+ years of experience in software development and full product life-cyclesExperience in data mining, machine learning, knowledge representation or Map-ReduceExcellent verbal and written communication skillsProven track record of architecting and building scalable systemsFluency in written German/French/Spanish/Italian/Chinese/Japanese Ability to technically lead small to mid-size teams, mentor junior membersResults oriented person with a delivery focusAbility to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
