The operations technicians role is to work within a Team to operate an assigned area of responsibility in the plant to safely meet the production requirements of their assigned shift and contribute to the development of the operation of the team as a unit.
Technicians are responsible for:
producing the required output during their shift
protecting the quality integrity of the product at all stages of production and loading
Controlling the cost of operations including the use of processing aids, energy, and equipment repair.
optimizing the useful life of equipment
learning multiple skills (skill blocks) and rotating through those blocks to maintain proficiency
acquiring new skills as required by changes in technology, regulations, and team development
attending and actively participating in meetings and training during shifts and on non-scheduled days or times
effectively communicating with coworkers in all areas of the plant and all shifts
discussing performance of other team members to provide praise and to address inadequate performance
making suggestions for improvements
implementing changes in operations or team behaviors
working overtime as required
maintaining satisfactory attendance
Technicians are responsible for following all safety procedures, acting safely themselves, requiring coworkers to act safely at all times, and actively participate in Safety meetings and programs such as behavior based safety observations.
Technicians are responsible for understanding required parameters for their area of responsibility, anticipating possible deviations from required conditions, and taking corrective action in a timely manner to correct deviations.
Technicians are expected to troubleshoot problems and propose and implement solutions within their degree of expertise. Problems beyond the ability of the technician to handle are to be brought to the attention of the team leader.
Technicians are responsible for reading and understanding safety procedures, safety data sheets, job instruction materials, standard operating procedures, equipment manuals, process flow diagrams, work orders, safety permits, company memos, training materials for team development, product specifications, order forms, etc.
Technicians also perform minor maintenance repairs and lubrication on equipment such a pumps and bearings and assist skilled maintenance technicians during shutdowns.
Operates production or utility equipment which may include the following, depending upon the area of operations the team member is assigned to:
o sugar storage bins
o sugar melter
o vacuum pans
o recovery pans
o railcar mover
o gas boilers
o water treatment equipment
o steam turbines
o waste treatment ponds
o testing equipment for sample analysis
o computer control system
Repairs equipment and uses a wide variety of tools for that purpose which may include:
o hand tools of all sorts (wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, grinders, etc.)
o shop tools including lathe, mill, drill press, bender, shear, etc.
o basic electrical test equipment (voltmeter, meg, etc.)
Required to make notations or entries on shift logs
Knowledge and Experience
High School diploma or GED
2 year Technical Degree a plus
Minimum of three years prior work experience
Knowledge or experience in sugar processing desired
Skills and Abilities
read and write English at least at the 8th grade level
perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, use fractions and decimals, and to find answers using given formulas
possess basic computer skills such as keyboarding, email, Windows, navigation and functionalities.
read and interpret diagrams for process flows and equipment construction
understand principles of process and mechanical equipment in their operation.
learn new information at no less than an average speed
communicate clearly when expressing ideas and conveying information both orally and in writing
understand the communications of others both oral and written
organize and express information in a systematic and logical way
maintain composure during stressful events.

This is a food processing plant environment. Exposure to high temperatures, moving machinery, moving equipment, chemicals, noises, heights, and confined spaces is involved.
