The Director of Marketing and Communications will develop and implement a marketing and communications program that positions the School of Government effectively with all of its external and internal constituents and successfully contributes to increasing revenue necessary for the School’s operation. Working directly with the Associate Dean for Programs and Marketing, the Director will develop and implement the following: 1. Strategies, initiatives, and materials to market the School’s educational offerings (courses, publications, services, programs, etc.) to appropriate client and student populations 2. Strategies, initiatives, and materials to create and promote awareness, positive perceptions, and increased support for the School from all key constituencies (i.e., prospective and current clients, students, legislators, alumni, individuals and institutional peers in the academic community, donors, and the media) The Director of Marketing and Communications serves as a division manager and provides direct supervision for two communications specialists and two graphic designers.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required (preferably with a major in mass communication, marketing, English, or public relations); master’s degree preferred.

Qualifications and Experience

Must have a minimum of seven to ten years of experience in institutional marketing and communications, preferably in a higher education setting. Must have demonstrated expertise in building and managing effective teams; exceptional written and oral communication skills; knowledge of principles and practices of product and institutional marketing and evaluation of their effectiveness; knowledge of graphic design principles and print production processes; familiarity with online marketing and social media tools and best practices; ability to meet deadlines for multiple projects with minimal supervision; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of colleagues and others; and an employment history highlighted by increasing levels of responsibility. Knowledge of North Carolina and an appreciation of the role of the university in the state are desirable.
